Mudcats Shutout Diamond Jaxx

Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats (34-27) shut out the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (24-38) 4-0 Friday night at Five County Stadium before 6,277 fans.

Carolina starter Travis Wood (W, 6-3) no-hit West Tenn for 6.2 innings before Marshall Hubbard singled to right in the seventh. Wood threw seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing one hit while striking out nine and walking only one Diamond Jaxx batter. Wood retired 19 straight hitters after issuing a leadoff walk in the first inning until Hubbard's clean single. Philippe Valiquette and Ramon Geronimo each pitched an inning in relief of Wood to preserve the shutout.

The Mudcats moved to within two games of first-place Huntsville with eight to play in the first half. Huntsville was leading Jacksonville 7-6 in the seventh inning at press time.

West Tenn starter Kyle Parker (L, 3-3) gave up four earned runs over five innings of work, giving up all seven of Carolina's hits while walking three. West Tenn relievers Ricky Orta and Josh Fields combined to throw three perfect innings out of the bullpen.

Mudcat catcher Chris Denove singled twice, drove in a run and laid down a sacrifice bunt all while calling a shutout game from behind the plate. Zack Cozart and Todd Frazier each posted multi-hit games for Carolina.

Game three of the series is scheduled for 6:15PM Saturday night at Five County Stadium. Jordan Smith (4-1, 2.95) gets the nod for Carolina while Luis Munoz (1-2, 4.86) will make the start for the Diamond Jaxx.
