Smokies Hold off Late Threats to Beat BayBears

Mobile BayBears News Release

MOBILE, Ala. - The BayBears had opportunities to sneak back into their contest with the Tennessee Smokies on Friday night at Hank Aaron Stadium, but with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, the BayBears were all out of rallies as they fell 5-3.

Brian Schlitter (S, 9) was asked to record two tough outs by Smokies (27-35) skipper Ryne Sandberg, but he got the job done as he fanned Pedro Ciriaco and Evan Frey looking with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth.

John Gaub put the Smokies into that ninth-inning trouble after working out of a similar jam in the eighth. Alex Maestri was ineffective as the BayBears (34-28) sliced the Tennessee lead in half thanks to a home run by Pete Clifford and a wild pitch by Gaub to plate Ciriaco.

Tennessee did most of their damage early against Wes Roemer (2-4) who surrendered 10 hits over six frames. Tennessee climbed on the board with three second-inning singles, the last of which by Darwin Barney, scored Ty Wright.

Sean Coughlin knotted the score at 1-1 with a big fly off starter Casey Coleman (6-2), who wouldn't be touched again. The Smokies took the lead for good in the fifth with Coleman igniting the rally with a bunt single. Coleman advanced to third on Tony Thomas' double with both men scoring on a two-bagger by James Adduci.

Roemer coughed up an unearned run in the sixth as Barney's sac fly brought home Blake Lalli. Lalli singled in Adduci with a smash to center in the seventh off Scott Maine, who worked two frames. Kyler Newby tossed a scoreless ninth.

The BayBears battle the Smokies in game three of their series on Saturday with Jarrod Parker (3-3, 3.00) getting the start at 7:05 p.m. For Hank Aaron Stadium tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
