Mississippi Braves News Release
Pearl, MS - Birmingham's offense came to play Friday night at Trustmark Park as they ripped five doubles and downed the M-Braves 6-2 to take a two-games-to-none lead in this five-game series.
Ryne Reynoso worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the first, but couldn't escape the second without the Barons getting on the board. Birmingham's potent lineup touched up the M-Braves starter for three runs in the second.
Stefan Gartrell walked and scored on a Jordan Danks double to get on the board. CJ Lang singled and later scored on a sac-fly by CJ Retherford and Danks scored on a double by Tyler Flowers. When the dust settled, the Barons were up 3-0.
They added another run in the third. Dayan Viciedo led off the inning with a single and scored from first on a double by Gartrell to push the lead to 4-0.
Mississippi threatened in the home-half of the inning, loading the bases with no outs, but came away with only one run. Concepcion Rodriguez, Kala Ka'aihue and Matt Young singled consecutively to start the inning. Rodriguez came in to score on a fielder's choice by Willie Cabrera to get the Braves on the board.
Birmingham went up 5-1 in the fifth when David Cook singled and scored on a single by John Shelby.
The Braves got that run back in the sixth when Willie Cabrera doubled and scored on a groundout by Greg Creek.
The Barons added one more insurance run in the ninth on a bases loaded double play to make the final 6-2.
Birmingham's Lucas Harrell improved to 8-2 after giving up just two runs on seven hits through six innings. Jhonny Nunez threw two shutout innings and Fernando Hernandez tossed a scoreless ninth.
Reynoso fell to 3-3 after allowing five runs in five innings. Cory Gearrin and Kevin Gunderson combined to throw three scoreless innings of relief. Jerome Gamble gave up a run in the top of the ninth.
Game three of this five-game set will be at Trustmark Park on Saturday night at 7:05. The Braves' Kyle Cofield (4-2, 3.22) will take on Birmingham's John Ely (6-1, 3.23).
Saturday night will bring an appearance by the always entertaining mascot Rally. It will also be Department of Human Services Fatherhood Initiative Night when responsible fathers from around the state will be in attendance with their children. The M-Braves Silent Auction tables will be set up throughout the game where fans can bid on fabulous Braves memorabilia.
