Wood pitches Mudcats to shutout win over Jaxx

ZEBULON, NC. (JUNE 12, 2009) - The West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (24-38) ran into one of the top pitchers in minor league baseball on Friday night, Travis Wood (6-3) and are blanked by the final score of 4-0. Travis Wood went 6.2 innings before surrendering a hit to Marshall Hubbard. Wood lowered his league leading ERA to 1.11 in his 13th start of the season.

The Mudcats put a run on the scoreboard in the second inning. With Zach Cozart in scoring position and two outs, Cats' catcher Chris Denove bloops a base hit to center giving Carolina a 1-0 lead. Cozart picked up a one out single and stole second base.

Carolina added a second run in the third. Kyle Parker (3-3) walked the first two batters that he faced in the inning. Todd Frazier singled to center and that scored Sean Henry giving the Mudcats a 2-0 lead.

Back-to-back doubles by Todd Frazier and Juan Francisco led off the sixth inning for Carolina. Frazier finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. The double by Francisco brought in Frazier and put the Cats up 3-0. After a single by Zach Cozart put runners on the corner, the Jaxx went to the bullpen. Ricky Orta relieved Kyle Parker and allowed just one run to score and minimizing the damage. The run scored on a fielding error by short stop Oswaldo Navarro. After six innings, Carolina led 4-0.

Kyle Parker the starter for the Jaxx went five innings. Parker gave up four earned runs on seven base hits. Parker struck out three and walked three.

Diamond Jaxx reliever, Josh Fields went two scoreless innings, setting down all six of the batters he faced. Fields struck out three in the first extended inning outing of the season.

The Diamond Jaxx threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning. Against Phillipe Valiquette, Matt Mangini and Yamid Haad each singled, then Oswaldo Navarro walked to load the bases. Mel Stocker grounded out with two outs and the bases loaded to end the threat.

Marshall Hubbard doubled in the ninth inning off of Ramon Geronimo. Hubbard picked up his third consecutive multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with the double. Hubbard 8 for his last 11 at the plate with three homers in his last three games.

The Diamond Jaxx were shutout for the 11th time in 2009 and are now 5-18 against left-handers this season.

With the series tied at one game each, game three will be on Saturday night at 5:15 CDT. RHP Luis Munoz (1-2, 4.76) makes his eighth start of the season for the Jaxx. He will be opposed by RHP Jordan Smith (4-1, 2.95) for the Carolina Mudcats.
