ZEBULON, N.C. (July 12, 2014) - Despite another strong outing from Tyler Danish, Winston-Salem dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium.
Five days after blanking powerful Myrtle Beach over six innings, Danish was almost as strong on Saturday. The right-hander surrendered just one run over five and a third innings. His 2.39 earned run average, which includes his time with the Dash and Low-A Kannapolis, is among the 30 best in full-season Minor League Baseball, and the 19-year-old is the youngest pitcher within that group.
The lone tally Carolina (15-9, 44-47) mustered against Danish knotted the score in the sixth inning. Erik Gonzalez led off the frame with a single and came around on a LeVon Washington double.
Later in the frame, Euclides Leyer replaced Danish and stranded a pair of Mudcats in scoring position. However, in the seventh, Leyer allowed the run of distinction. Todd Hankins' one-out single plated Yhoxian Medina, who began the inning with a double.
Out of the bullpen, Ben Heller (1-0) retired a pair and stranded an inherited runner at third for the victory, while Grant Sides escaped a jam in the eighth before recording a flawless ninth for his first save.
The Dash (12-12, 42-50) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on the first pitch of the second inning. Nick Basto lashed a home run beyond the boards in left-center for his third long ball of the season. This was the only run Winston-Salem mustered against Carolina starter Shawn Morimando, who worked six and a third innings and scattered six hits.
Winston-Salem strives for its first win of this series on Sunday afternoon at 2. The Dash send Jefferson Olacio (0-4, 4.84 ERA) to the bump to square off with fellow southpaw Ryan Merritt (9-2, 1.82 ERA), who leads the Carolina League in earned run average. Pregame coverage begins at 1:45 on wsdash.com/broadcast.
The Dash return home Wednesday for a three-game series with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. For tickets to the three 7 o'clock games, call (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
