Pelicans Turn Triple Play En Route To Victory

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Texas Rangers, defeated the Lynchburg Hillcats 8-6 on Saturday night at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. The Pelicans turned a 5-4-3 triple play in the fourth inning and held on to the victory despite a late Hillcats rally. Victor Payano earned his first win since May 11 by tossing five innings allowing two runs, striking out three, and walking three.

The Hillcats (9-14, 43-50) got on the board first in the first inning. With David Nick at third base, Jose Martinez doubled down the right field line put Lynchburg ahead 1-0.

The Pelicans (14-10, 57-34) tied the game in the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Kevin Torres bringing home Christopher Bostick.

Myrtle Beach capitalized with runners in scoring position in the bottom of the third against right-hander Cody Scarpetta. With one out, and one on, Preston Beck doubled to the right center field gap, scoring Nick Williams to put the club ahead 2-1.

With runners on the corners, Lewis Brinson hit a ground ball that was mishandled by first baseman Justin Bloxom. Beck scored on the fielder's choice and both Royce Bolinger and Brinson were safe on the play. Bostick continued the hit parade with a ground rule double to right center, plating Bolinger to extend the lead to 4-1.

Torres finished off the five-run inning hitting a sacrifice fly to center field. Brinson came home on the sacfice fly and jarred the ball loose out of catcher Joseph Odom's glove. The error on Odom, allowed Bostick to score as well to make it 6-1 Pelicans.

The Pelicans turned their first triple play of the season in the fourth inning. After consecutive singles off of Payano, Odom hit a ground ball to Luis Mendez, who then threw over to Bostick, who fired to Beck to complete the 5-4-3 triple play.

The Pelicans tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, on RBI singles by Bostick and Brinson.

The Hillcats bats came alive in the later frames of the contest. In the fifth inning, Lynchburg scored a run to cut the deficit to 8-2.

After Cody Buckel threw a 1-2-3 sixth inning, the Hillcats added two runs off of him in the seventh. With a runner at second and two outs, Landoni singled home the first run. In the next at-bat, Kevin Ahrens singled to center, scoring Landoni to cut the lead to 8-4.

Cody Kendall got out of the jam in the seventh to keep the four-run lead in tact, but gave up a pair of runs in the eighth. Levi Hyams led off the frame with a double and scored on a Blake Brown single to left, and Brown advanced to second on a fielding error by Williams. Landoni then singled to bring home Brown and make the score 8-6.

After the Pelicans went quietly in the eighth, Jose Leclerc entered the game in the ninth. He allowed back-to-back one-out singles recording the final two outs of the game.

Payano (4-6) earned the win, striking out three, walking three, and allowing six hits. Scarpetta (3-3) lost the contest. Leclerc earned his tenth save of the year.

The Pelicans continue the series against the Hillcats on Sunday night at 6:05 p.m. at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark. Myrtle Beach sends Luis Parra (7-4, 4.20 ERA) to the hill, opposing Daniel Watts (0-2, 5.79) of the Hillcats. The game can be heard live on WRNN AM 1450 ESPN Myrtle Beach, on the TuneIn Radio App, and via the MiLB First Pitch App, beginning with the Hampton Inn Pregame Show at 5:45 p.m.

Friday is Hypnosis Night courtesy of Big Laughs Theatre. There will also be post-game fireworks courtesy of East Coast Pyrotechnics and Star 92.1.
