Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, NC --- John Raynor belted a three-run homer as part of a four-run sixth, while Carolina turned its first triple play in a dozen years, leading the Mudcats past the Mississippi Braves 7-2 at Five County Stadium, lowering their magic number to clinching the Northern Division to seven.
Leading 2-1 entering the sixth, the Mudcats (36-21) scored a run on a sacrifice fly by Brad Davis, then Raynor smacked a 3-1 pitch from Kevin Gunderson over the left-centerfield wall for his 12th home run and a 6-1 lead.
The Mudcats increased their lead in the North to 7 1/2 games over second-place Tennessee pending the outcome of the Smokies' game at Montgomery.
Graham Taylor (W, 2-0) won his second straight Double-A start, his organizational leading 13th win, and drove in a run with his first pro hit in the second inning to give the Mudcats a 2-1 lead. Taylor scattered nine hits over six innings, and saw three double plays and a triple play turned behind him during his outing.
Carolina turned its third triple play in club history, and the first since May 5, 1996 against Memphis, in the Mississippi fourth inning. The first two Braves reached before Greg Creek lined a pitch to shortstop Manuel Mayorson, who caught the ball running toward second base. Mayorson touched second base for the force on Jordan Schafer, then threw to Alberto Concepcion to nudge Javier Guzman at first base to cap the triple play.
Ryan Tucker allowed a run during two innings in relief, while Todd Doolittle worked a scoreless ninth.
Carolina will send newcomer Nick McCurdy (0-0, 0.00) to the hill on Wednesday night against Kris Medlen (5-7, 3.75) at 7:15 PM ET.
