Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY - The Montgomery Biscuits (31-25; 65-61) dropped a fourth straight game Tuesday night at Riverwalk Stadium, 4-2, giving the Tennessee Smokies (29-28-28; 56-71) a 2-0 series lead in the teams' final series of the 2008 season.
Heath Rollins pitched well (7 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K, 1 HR) in his home debut for Montgomery, but did not get much support from the Biscuits offense, taking his first AA loss.
If not for the Smokies three and four hitters, Rollins would have been nearly untouched. Of the five hits he allowed, four came from Nate Spears and Jake Fox.
Spears had two hits against Rollins and was knocked in twice by Fox. Fox slapped an RBI single, giving Tennesee the 1-0 in the first inning and then again gave his team the edge, belting his 24th homer (2nd in the Southern League) with Spears on base to make the score 3-2.
Fox would score an insurance run against Biscuits reliever Ryan Reid in the ninth, but Tennessee would not need the tally.
Smokies starter Esmailin Caridad had his way with the Biscuits lineup, allowing just two runs on two hits in seven innings of work. Sergio Pedroza's massive two-run home run in the second inning was the only damage against Caridad and the Biscuits only runs in the game.
Caridad did not allow a hit in his final five frames of work, before giving way to closer Jose Ceda.
Ceda slammed the door, but not without giving up two hits and putting the tying runs on base in the bottom of the ninth. However, he regained his composure and struck out J.T. Hall and Matt Spring to end the ballgame.
Despite the loss, the Biscuits did not lose any ground on the division leading Mississippi Braves, who also lost on Tuesday night to the Carolina Mudcats.
In the middle game of the series, the Biscuits will rely on Jeremy Hellickson to stop the bleeding against fellow right hander Grant Johnson. Hellickson is looking for his fifth straight quality start.
