Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, NC --- Following an 11-day road trip, the Carolina Mudcats returned home Friday night only to drop the opener of a five-game set with Mississippi 7-4 at Five County Stadium.

The Mudcats (26-30) finished a 4-6 road trip on Thursday night, fell behind the Braves (24-31) 1-0 after 2 1/2 innings, then waited out a one-hour, 16-minute rain delay before losing the first meeting of the season between the non-divisional rivals.

James Russ (L, 2-6) suffered his fifth straight loss, working 4 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and six runs. Russ pitched effectively for three innings prior to the delay, but with the Mudcats shorthanded in the bullpen, returned after the rain and struggled through his final 1 1/3 frames. The Braves pushed across a run in the fourth and added four in the fifth to assume a 6-0 lead.

Carolina closed to within 6-4 with a four-run rally in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run homer by Alejandro DeAza. The loss was Carolina's fourth straight after reaching the .500 mark on Monday.

Anibal Sanchez (2-4) starts the second game of the series on Saturday night at 7:15 PM ET.
