Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
Jacksonville, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns again used strong pitching and powerful offense to dismantle the Mobile BayBears by the score of 7-2 in front of a festive Saturday night crowd of 7,194 at the Baseball Grounds.
The win combined with a Montgomery loss to Chattanooga cuts the Suns magic number to clinch the first half division title to seven. The Suns are now 6.5 games ahead of the Biscuits in the South Division standings with 13 games remaining.
Jacksonville opened the scoring against Mobile starter Jared Wells in the second inning as Tony Abreu singled home Andy LaRoche to open up a 1-0 lead. Wells entered the game with the League's best ERA at 1.70.
The Suns extended the lead on the Mobile ace in the third inning as the Southern League's leading RBI man came through again. Andy LaRoche belted an opposite field, two-run homerun into the right-centerfield bleachers to extend the Jacksonville lead to 3-0. It was LaRoche's seventh homerun of the season and RBI numbers 39 and 40.
The Suns again got to the Mobile starter in the fifth inning as Abreu drove in two more runs on another single to extend the lead to 5-0.
Meanwhile on the other side, Danny Muegge returned from the disabled list with a tremendous five inning outing in which he allowed two runs (one earned) in the sixth inning off of only three Mobile hits on the evening. The Brenham, Texas native struck out two while walking one in his first outing since mid-May.
The Suns answered the two-run top of the sixth with two runs in the bottom half, both on RBI walks from Andy LaRoche and Tydus Meadows to extend the Jacksonville lead to 7-2.
Jacksonville has now won 17 of their last 22 games, with four of the five losses in that span coming by two runs or less. The Suns have now recorded double-digit hit performances in seven straight games and eight or more hits in 19 straight.
Jacksonville and Mobile meet for game three Sunday at 3:05 p.m. ET. Mobile will start LH Roger Deago against Suns RH Heath Totten. All kids will receive a Southpaw and Friends coloring book and will be able to run the bases following the game. Tickets are available by calling the Suns box office at 904-358-2846.
