Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans earned a three-game sweep of the Carolina Mudcats after scoring four runs in the sixth inning of a 6-4 win on Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium. Myrtle Beach (33-28) won their eighth in a row over Carolina (20-42). The loss was the Mudcats' season-long sixth in a row.
The Pelicans' bullpen was a big factor in their comeback as Will Lamb (1-0) tossed four hitless innings for the win. He walked one and struck out one. Randol Rojas tossed the final inning-and-a-third for his first save. The Mudcats were held without a hit over the final five innings.
Francisco Valera (0-3) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in only an inning-and-two-thirds in relief. The blown save was the 13th of the season for Carolina.
Trailing 4-2 in the sixth, Patrick Cantwell singled and moved to second on a walk to Rougned Odor by starter Michael Peoples. Valera replaced Peoples, but promptly surrendered a double to Trever Adams. The two-bagger scored Cantwell, and moved the tying run to third.
A hit batter loaded the bases, and Joe Maloney drew a walk to tie the game, 4-4. With two out, Edwin Garcia roped a double down the left field line to give the Pelicans a 6-4 lead.
Kellin Deglan gave Myrtle Beach the early lead with a two-run homer in the second, but the Mudcats surged in front with a four-run fourth. Starter Alec Asher issued back-to-back walks to Bo Greenwell and Charlie Valerio. Bryson Myles laced a double off the left field wall to cut the lead to 2-1.
An inside pitch plunked Paddy Matera on the shoulder to load the bases for Zack MacPhee. The left fielder skipped a single to center, scoring Valerio. Joey Wendle put the Mudcats ahead with a sacrifice fly to deep center. A Francisco Lindor single scored Matera for a 4-2 lead.
The Mudcats welcome the Potomac Nationals to Five County Stadium on Monday night for the first of three. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Purchase tickets today by calling (919) 269-2287, or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
