THE HILLCATS: Split their first doubleheader of the season last night...The 'Cats won the first game 2-1 behind great pitching from RHP Ryan Weber and the bullpen...Weber (4-1) gave up just one run in 5.2 innings and earned the win...SS Elmer Reyes and CF Matt Lipka delivered RBI singles in the fifth inning...In game two, the Red Sox struck early...RHP Greg Ross gave up hits to six of the the first nine batters he faced allowing two runs in the first inning and then he got out of a bases loaded, nobody out jam in the second...Those would be the only earned runs he would allow in five inning, but Ross (2-3) still took the loss...The lone run for the Hillcats in game two was the result of OF Will Skinner's seventh home run of the season...Lynchburg is now 31-28, and since the Potomac Nationals swept their doubleheader last night, the 'Cats are now 4.5 games out of first...
VS. SALEM: The Hillcats are 2-5 against the Red Sox this season...Salem swept the first series they played in Lynchburg 3-0,w ith one game getting postponed due to rain...The last series in Salem was split 1-1 and the finale was postponed due to rain...The 'Cats won the season series 12-8 over the Red Sox last year...They went 7-4 at home against Salem, playing one extra home game because a game in Salem was postponed during a four-game home and home series in which a doubleheader was played in Lynchburg to make up for the Salem rainout...Salem and Lynchburg are closest in vicinity of any two teams in the Carolina League separated by just 57 miles...
SEE YA NEXT HALF: Today concludes the Hillcats home schedule for the first half of the season...They will finish at least three games above .500 at home, even if they lost both game this afternoon..The 'Cats begin a week-long road trip tomorrow that will take them to the All-Star Break and then open up the second half with a seven-game homestand starting Friday, June 21...
I SAW RED: Beginning with the doubleheader last night, the Hillcats will finish the first half with nine games in nine days against the Salem Red Sox...They will mix in three games against the Winston-Salem Dash in those nine days as well...Another doubleheader is scheduled for tonight, and again they will play two Thursday night in Salem...There is a rule that says no team can play more the three doubleheaders in seven days, so should either team need to play a doubleheader Tuesday or Wednesday, there would need to be some rescheduling for the final weekend...
DOUBLE DIPS: The Hillcats are now 1-1 in doubleheader games this season after last night's split...The Red Sox are 3-4 in doubleheader games this year...Last season, the Hillcats went an even 8-8 in twin bills...
ALL-STARS ANNOUNCED: The Carolina League All-Stars were revealed Friday...The Myrtle Beach Pelicans accepted the most spots on the roster with five, while the Wilmington Blue Rocks were the only team to reserve just one spot, but all eight teams will be represented in San Jose, CA on June 18th...The Hillcats will send two players, OF Robby Hefflinger and OF David Rohm...In addition, Lynchburg skipper Luis Salazar will manage the Carolina League squad and bring along his pitching coach Derek Botelho and athletic trainer Joe Toenjes...
HILLCATS STARS: OF Robby Hefflinger and OF David Rohm have been named All-Stars for the first time in their careers this season...Hefflinger will start in the outfield, while Rohm will enter as a reserve...Hefflinger currently ranks tied for seventh in batting average (.291), first in home runs (16), fifth in RBI (39), fifth in hits (65), first in slugging (.578), first in extra-base hits (31), and first in total bases (129)...Rohm ranks 11th in batting average (.282), and is tied for third in doubles (18)...Hefflinger and Rohm are also the only two players in the Carolina League this season to compile a 12-game hitting streak...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Mike McCarthy was selected by the Red Sox out of California State University Bakersfield in the 14th round of the 2011 draft...Pitched in five games, including four starts, for Salem in 2012... Went 2-1 with a 2.55 ERA and 20 strikeouts...Spent most of last season with Greenville (SAL) where he went 3-4 with a 3.66 ERA in 26 games...Made his professional debut with Short-season Lowell in 2011...Went 1-1 with a 4.64 ERA in 17 relief appearances...Transferred to Cal State Bakersfield from D-III school, the University of Redlands...Sat out 2009 due to the transfer, then played two season with Bakersfield...Tied for the team lead in wins in 2010 with current Winston-Salem Dash catcher Martin Medina...One start against Lynchburg this season (5ip, 6h, 2er, 1bb, 7k)...Seven strikeouts is a season-high...
GAME TWO OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Mike Augliera was a fifth-round pick by the Red Sox in 2012, is in his first full season in the Boston organization and first season in the Carolina League....The 22-year-old was drafted after his senior season with SUNY Binghamton (Binghamton, NY)...Led the NCAA in strikeout-to-walk ratio his senior season...After being drafted, spent remainder of 2012 with the Lowell Spinners of the New York Penn League and appeared in 15 games, 14 starts, going 1-3 with a 4.42 ERA... He continued his outstanding command from college, striking out 43 and walking only 3...Was 4-0 with a 3.12 ERA going into his eighth start May 19...He is now 4-3 with a 4.76 ERA...Has lost each of his last three starts, and posted an ERA of 8.35 in his last four starts...Only recorded one out his last start against Winston-Salem giving up eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits...Tonight is his second start against the Hillcats...Gave up two run on five hits in 5.1 innings in Lynchburg on April 20...
