Potomac Nationals News Release

Woodbridge, VA- The scorching hot Potomac Nationals (36-24, 22-11) swept their doubleheader with the Frederick Keys (32-28, 17-15) on Saturday evening at Pfitzner Stadium by clipping the Keys 8-7 in Game One of the twin bill while taking the nightcap by the final score of 4-3. The Nationals have now claimed victory in 10 consecutive games and earned a 4.0 game lead over the 2nd place Keys with the broom job of the pair of Saturday games.

In the opener, Washington Nationals LHP Ross Detwiler made a rehabilitation start as the southpaw has been nursing a tweaked oblique.

Detwiler, a former Potomac Nationals hurler who dealt during the 2007 and 2008 campaigns, threw 60 pitches, 38 of which were for strikes. Detwiler allowed one earned run on seven singles through 3.2 innings pitched with no walks and four strikeouts.

In a post-game media session, Detwiler said, "I didn't feel bad at all. It's the first time I've seen hitters in about a month, so it wasn't completely sharp, but it was good to go out there and get some contact and try to make the fielders work behind me."

Off Frederick RHP Brady Wager in his Keys debut, Potomac exploded with a four run 1st frame courtesy of an infield RBI single by RF Caleb Ramsey, an RBI triple by SS Jason Martinson, a run scoring double off the bat of C Adrian Nieto, and an RBI bloop single by 1B Kevin Keyes.

Frederick got on the score board in the 2nd inning with an RBI fielder's choice chopper by RF John Ruettiger, while Potomac answered with an individual run in the 3rd inning on an RBI fielder's choice by Nieto back to the mound to make it a 5-1 Nationals lead.

Frederick scored two runs in innings five through seven using a solo home run by DH Nick Delmonico, his ninth longball in 2013, and a double play ball by 3B Jason Esposito in the 5th off RHP Brian Dupra, a two-run single by 1B Christian Walker in the 6th off RHP Richie Mirowski with runs charged to RHP Greg Holt (H, 2), and a two-run jack out to left field from the stick of CF Delvi Cid off Mirowski, his third four-bagger of the current campaign.

Holt earned his second hold of the 2013 season.

Meanwhile, the P-Nats threw up a three-run 6th stanza amidst Frederick's consistent scoring on an RBI three-bagger from LF Billy Burns and a two-run mammoth homer by CF Michael Taylor out to left field, his fifth dinger of the season.

Mirowski (BS 5) (4-3), the winning pitcher, gave up two runs, one earned, on two hits and one walk, while fanning a pair.

The losing pitcher, Frederick LHP Zach Fowler (2-3), surrendered three earned runs in 1.0 innings on four hits.

In the nightcap action, Potomac RHP A.J. Cole (3-2), the winning pitcher, stole the show striking out a career-high 11 batters. Cole fanned the side in the 2nd inning.

The Keys got on the board with Delmonico's second homer of the day and tenth deep blast of the season, a titanic shot over all three tiers of signage in the 3rd to give Frederick a 1-0 lead.

Potomac did not score until they collectively sent nine men to the plate in the 6th stanza and earned four runs against the losing pitcher, Keys RHP Matt Price (0-1), and RHP David Walters (BS, 5).

Price was charged with two runs, one earned, on one hit and two walks.

A wild pitch brought home Martinson, 1B Justin Miller cranked an RBI triple, C Cole Leonida smoked a run scoring double, and Burns nubbed an RBI infield single to put Potomac up 4-1.

A stressful 9th inning saw P-Nats RHP Derek Self (H, 2) walk three batters, allow one base hit, and ultimately be hit for two earned runs before RHP Rob Wort earned his second save in a tough spot. Wort inherited the bases loaded and walked DH Michael Ohlman before Walker fanned swinging as Wort came back from a 3-0 count and C Zane Chaves knocked a 6-3 groundout to Martinson at shortstop to end the contest and seal ten consecutive wins for the Potomac Nationals.

Sunday will usher in the Game Three finale and final home game of the first half of the season for the Potomac Nationals at 1:05pm with gates opening at 12:00pm.

Potomac RHP Taylor Hill (4-2, 3.78) battles Frederick LHP Tim Berry (3-3, 4.63) in the finale.

Sunday will feature a special game used jersey auction to benefit Autism Speaks sponsored by Lindsay Automotive in which game jerseys will be auctioned off on the concourse during the game.
