Mudcats Drop Fifth Straight 8-2 to Fayetteville

ZEBULON, N.C. - Luke Adams had two hits and scored twice on two hits from Jadher Areinamo, but those four combined hits and two runs ended up accounting for all of the run production in an 8-2 Carolina Mudcats loss to the Fayetteville Woodpeckers on Saturday night at Five County Stadium. The loss was Carolina's season worst fifth straight.
Left-hander Jose Nodal started for the Woodpeckers (24-32) and worked through five scoreless innings with one hit, three walks and four strikeouts while earning his first victory of the season. Nodal (W, 1-5) held the Mudcats (30-23) without a hit over the first three innings before giving up a two-out single to Adams in the fourth.
Adams ended up going 2-for-3 with two runs, a double and walk in the loss. He and Areinamo combined for all four Carolina hits and both Carolina runs. Adams walked and scored on an Areinamo single in the seventh. He also doubled and scored on an Areinamo double in the ninth.
The Woodpeckers were originally held scoreless over the first and second by starter Alexander Vallecillo, but scored twice in the third and five times in the fifth off reliever Yujanyer Herrera while running away with their fifth straight victory.
Herrera (L, 1-3) walked a batter and allowed a RBI triple to Zach Cole in the two run third. The five run fifth then saw a RBI double from Cole, a two-run double from Narbe Cruz and a Luis Encarnacion two-run home run.
In all, Herrera walked four, struck out two and allowed seven runs on six hits over two and 2/3 innings. Jeferson Figueroa replaced Herrera in the fifth and stranded two baserunners while working two and 1/3 scoreless frames. Figueroa worked around two walks and struck out two. Jeison Pena pitched the final two innings and finished with two walks, three strikeouts and a run allowed on three hits.
The series will conclude Sunday afternoon with the finale of the seven-game set beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Five County Stadium.
