Carolina Mudcats News Release

Chattanooga, TN --- Randy Messenger pitched six strong innings to lead the Carolina Mudcats to a 4-2 win over the Chattanooga Lookouts at Bell South Park on Monday night.

Carolina's Matt Padgett (HR, 8, 1-4, RBI) and Tommy Bost (HR, 1, 3-4, RBI) hit solo homers to support Messenger's first win since May 12th.

Carolina's win, combined with second-place Tennessee's 6-1 loss to Greenville, reduced the Mudcats magic number to three for clinching the Eastern Division's first half. The Mudcats (37-24) lead the East by four games with seven to play.

Padgett's homer in the first against Josh Hall (L, 3-6) put Carolina ahead 1-0, but Messenger allowed two runs in the Lookouts (28-35) second inning.

The Mudcats went ahead for good in the fourth. Miguel Cabrera (3-5, R, 2-2B) doubled off the right field wall and was singled in by Adrian Gonzalez (2-5, R, 2B, RBI) to tie the game. After singles by Bost and Brandon Harper (2-3, W) loaded the bases, Messenger softly lined out for the second out. However, Hall walked Billy Hall (1-4, RBI, W) on four pitches to put Carolina ahead 3-2.

Bost's homer came leading off the sixth inning.

Fesh (ND, 1.2IP, 1H, 0R, 1W, 1K) worked 1 2/3 innings in relief before Jose Cueto (ND, 0.1IP, 0H, 0R, 0W, 0K) entered to retire a hitter with the tying runs in scoring position and two outs in the eight.

Mike Flannery (S, 9, 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0W, 2K) pitched a perfect ninth inning to record his ninth save, including his fourth save of Carolina's four wins on this road trip.

Donnie Bridges (4-1) will start Tuesday night against Chattanooga's Ryan Mottl (1-3) at 5:15 PM ET at Bell South Park.

Notes: Carolina is 4-1 on its eight-game road trip, with three remaining in Chattanooga... The Mudcats are 8-1 against the Lookouts this season, despite trailing in all nine games.... Cabrera, who leads the league with 27 doubles, doubled in the ninth inning by hitting a frozen rope three-quarters of the way up the green centerfield wall, measured at 400'. The blast, at its peak, may not have been high enough to clear the fence... At 13-games over .500, Carolina matches its highest level over .500 this season... Flannery, who had four saves in the first 54 games of the season, has five in Carolina's last seven games. Despite the usage, Flannery again touched 96 mph in the ninth inning Monday night.
