Rocks Come from Behind and Defeat Frederick

Frederick, MD--- The Wilmington Blue Rocks rallied from behind and notched a 9-8 victory over the Frederick Keys in front of 4,135 fans at Harry Grove Stadium in Frederick, MD. The Blue Rocks are 3-1 on their current six-game road trip and picked up a game on the Lynchburg Hillcats with Monday's win.

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans broke a four-game losing streak with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning in a 3-2 victory at home over Lynchburg on Monday.

Justin Cowan tied the game at 8-8 with a solo home run on the first pitch that he saw from Sendy Rleal (3-3) in the ninth inning. Chris Fallon followed with a solo home run of his own to give Wilmington a 9-8 advantage. It was Fallon's eighth home run of the season and his third against Frederick.

Billy Keppinger (2-1) retired all four batters that he faced and was credited with the victory.

Matt Burch closed the door on Frederick and notched his first save of the season by working a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

The two clubs battled back and forth on Monday night and both starting pitcher were gone from the game after four innings.

Zach McClellan allowed six runs on five hits over four innings and left the ballgame with the score 6-6. McClellan started the night by fanning the first two batters. He then walked three in a row and allowed a two-run single to Tripper Johnson and a three-run home run to Adam Manley.

All six of the runs that Frederick scored against McClellan came with two outs in an inning.

Trey Dyson drilled a two-run home run and pulled Wilmington to within a run in the third inning against Frederick starter Dave Farren. Dyson leads the club with 10 home runs on the season and he finished the night with three runs batted in.

The Blue Rocks chased Farren from the game in the fourth inning on a run-scoring triple by Derrik Lytle and an error by Mike Huggins.

Kyle Martin tied the game at six with a two-out flair single against McClellan in the fourth inning.

The Keys scored two more runs and broke a 6-6 tie on a two-out triple by Johnson in the seventh inning against reliever Eduardo Villacis.

Carl Makowsky allowed Wilmington to within a run in the eighth inning. Scott Walter reached on a leadoff double and scored on a fielder's choice groundout by Lytle.

The Blue Rocks have won six of their last seven and eight of their last 11 games after Monday night's thrilling come-from-behind win.

The Blue Rocks and Keys continue their three-game series at Harry Grove Stadium on Tuesday night at 7:15 p.m. Zack Greinke (9-0, 1.17) takes the hill for his 12th start of the season and his third against Frederick. Greinke is 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA in two prior starts against Frederick. The Keys hand the ball to Rommie Lewis (2-3, 3.15) on Tuesday night for his 11th start of the season and his first against the Blue Rocks.

Game Notes:

Scott Walter and Andres Blanco were selected as backups for the 2003 Carolina League All-Star Team. Zack Greinke and Kyle Middleton were selected to represent Wilmington and the Carolina League. Greinke was the top vote getter in the Carolina League. The 2003 Carolina-California All-Star Game will take place on Tuesday, June 24 in Rancho Cucamonga, CA.

Dyson has two home runs in his last three games and five in his last 11. He has also hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games.

Andres Blanco went 1-for-5 with an RBI on Monday night and has hit safely in four in a row and five of his last six games.

Adam Keim went 1-for-4 and has hit safely in five in a row for the second time this season.

The Rocks hit three home runs on Monday night and have hit 14 home runs in their last 11 games.
