Three Keys Named to Carolina League All-Star Team

Keys first baseman Mike Huggins, centerfielder Woody Cliffords, and third baseman Tripper Johnson were selected as Carolina League representatives in the 2003 Century 21 California vs. Carolina League All-Star Game on June 24th at The Epicenter in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. Huggins and Cliffords will start for the Carolina League All-Star Team while Johnson joins the team as a reserve.

Huggins is currently 4th in the Carolina League in hitting with a .340 batting average and ranks 3rd in the league in hits (71), 2nd in doubles (19), and 4th in slugging percentage (.502). The Keys everyday first baseman, Huggins is the Keys leading run producer with 37 RBI and has five home runs, 2nd most on the team. Earlier this season, Huggins had a 35-game consecutive on-base streak (4/14-5/22), which was the longest in minor league baseball.

Cliffords was named to represent his league in an all-star game for the second season in a row. Last season playing for Class A Delmarva, Cliffords was selected to the South Atlantic League All-Star Team. The left-handed hitting centerfielder is 5th in the Carolina League in runs scored with 40 and has remained one of the top batters in the league throughout the season. A native of West Hills, CA, Cliffords leads the Keys with seven home runs and is 2nd on the team with 30 RBI.

Johnson was named to the Carolina League All-Star Team as a reserve third baseman, his first all-star appearance. Johnson is currently 10th in the Carolina League in hitting with a .301 batting average and places second on the Keys with 12 doubles. Ranked the Orioles 9th best prospect by Baseball America following the 2002 season, Johnson has three home runs and 24 RBI on the season.

The first pitch of the 2003 Century 21 California vs. Carolina League All-Star Game will take place at 7:30 p.m. Country music artist Jenny Mack will sing the national anthem. The Vineyard Bank FanFest will precede the game from 2-5 p.m., and a skills competition, including the Mervyn's Home Run Derby and the Southwest Airlines Pitching Contest, will take place prior to the game as well.
