Mudbugs Win Hard Fought Battle With Brahmas in Texas
February 22, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, TX - Ken Carroll's fifth shutout of the season, Joe Ori's league-leading 10th game-winning goal and Jason Campbell's first goal of the year highlighted Bossier-Shreveport's 2-0 victory over the Texas Brahmas on Friday night at the NyTex Sports Centre.
Ori broke a scoreless tie early in the third period to put the Mudbugs on top 1-0, Campbell's empty net goal sealed the win and Carroll did the rest in goal as the 'Bugs reached 80 points this year.
Both teams brought their game in the first period, skating well and playing entertaining hockey despite neither team cracking the scoreboard. The Mudbugs outshot Texas 9-6 in the opening frame, and each team was awarded two powerplay opportunities, missing on both. The Mudbugs have now played to a scoreless first period 16 times this year.
That same theme continued into the second frame, with both teams continuing to play tough hockey in their defensive zones and prevent scoring chances. Texas held an 8-6 shot advantage during the second, and both teams again missed on two powerplay chances each. The game was scoreless after two periods for just the second time this year for the Mudbugs.
Bossier-Shreveport finally broke the stalemate early in the third though, taking the lead just 2:59 into the period. After getting a pass from Daniel Pegoraro, Ori raced into the zone along the boards. Being forced wide by a Texas defenseman, he backhanded a shot off the back of goaltender David Cacciola and in for his 22nd goal of the season, putting the Mudbugs in the lead. The Brahmas continued pushing to try and even the score, but Ken Carroll made a number of great saves, including robbing Tyler Skworchinski on a 2-on-1 with Anders Strome. Despite two more Texas powerplay chances and 12 third period shots, the Brahmas couldn't crack Carroll. Jason "Soupy" Campbell , playing his 399th career game with the Mudbugs, sealed the victory with his first goal of the season into an empty net with 1:20 to go. The goal was Campbell 's 290th career point, moving him ahead of Dale Henry for fifth place on the Mudbugs All-time scoring list.
Carroll made 26 total saves to extend his CHL record for career shutouts to 26 and win for the 17th time this year. David Cacciola stopped 28 shots in the loss. In all, Bossier-Shreveport outshot Texas 30-26. The Mudbugs were 0 for 4 on the powerplay while the Brahmas finished 0 for 6.
The Mudbugs will now head back home to finish out their third consecutive week of three games in three days against the Mississippi RiverKings. Saturday at 7:05 pm at CenturyTel Center , it's the ninth out of 12 meetings this season between Bossier-Shreveport and Mississippi , with the season series tied at four after the first eight games. The RiverKings were idle on Friday night after defeating Texas 5-1 at home on Thursday. Saturday will also be Faith & Family Night with church groups from throughout the Ark-La-Tex in attendance and a special post-game concert from Christian artist Brandon Heath. It's also a special $5.00 ticket night as we open the CenturyTel Center 's second level for the first time this year and make $5.00 seats available in the balcony.
