Mud Hens Promote Literacy Among Hispanic Youth

August 13, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release

The Toledo Mud Hens Baseball Club is excited to join an exciting new movement toward youth literacy, recently launched by the Books 4 Buddies campaign.

Shortstop Audy Ciriaco will read to Latino children at the TMC Migrant Seasonal Head Start, 27758 Lemoyne Road in Millbury, Ohio, at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 13, 2012.

Books 4 Buddies, which has collected more than 2,000 donations since June, will also distribute free books to the children and their families.

" The Mud Hens feel it's important to have a strong community presence off the playing field as well," says Cheri Pastula, manager of community relations. "The players really enjoy interacting with children and we are thrilled to have Audy visit with these children, in support of the Books 4 Buddies program."

A native of the Dominican Republic, Ciriaco, 25, is fluent in Spanish and will translate his reading to the youth who attend Monday's book giveaway.

Founded by 14-year-old L. Touré McCord II, Books 4 Buddies encourages children and teenagers, especially boys, to read for pleasure and personal development. The program is co-sponsored by the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, The Blade, WTVG 13 and the Toledo NAACP.
