Rochester Red Wings News Release

MONDAY, AUGUST 13, 2012 w COCA-COLA PARK

GAME #123 - ROAD GAME #63 - 7:05 P.M.

ROCHESTER RED WINGS (62-60) at LEHIGH VALLEY IRONPIGS (65-58)

RHP SHAIRON MARTIS (2-1, 5.63) vs. RHP TYLER CLOYD (11-1, 2.12)

QUICK TRIP: The Rochester Red Wings tonight conclude their 2-game roadtrip and series at Lehigh Valley (Phillies), their 3rd and final regular-season visit to Coca-Cola Park. The Red Wings started the trip by winning 10-0 in last night's opener. Rochester returns to Frontier Field tomorrow for a 6-game homestand, which includes a 4-game series vs. Indianapolis (Pirates) and a 2-game set vs. Empire State (Yankees). Then it's back on the road for another 2-game trip August 20-21, this time to Pawtucket (Red Sox).

ROSTER NEWS: Infielder Trevor Plouffe today was returned from rehab and reinstated from the 15-Day Disabled List. The 26-year-old played 2 games with the Red Wings, starting at third base in both contests and going a combined 0-for-8 with 2 strikeouts and a walk. Plouffe was on the 15-Day DL with a bruised right thumb.

a To make room for Plouffe on the 25-man roster, the Twins optioned infielder Tsuyoshi Nishioka to Triple-A Rochester. Nishioka, who is expected to join the team tomorrow in Rochester, played in 3 games for Minnesota and went hitless in 12 at-bats. He also walked once and collected an RBI. The switch hitter is batting .245 with 13 doubles, a homer, and 24 RBI in 84 games with the Red Wings.

THIS WOULD BE LOVELY: A victory tonight would make the Red Wings a season-high 3 games above .500 for the 3rd time. They were also 3 over at 5-2 after a 2-1 win vs. Pawtucket on April 11 and at 59-56 after a 10-9 win in 19 innings August 5 at Toledo (Tigers). Rochester was last 4 games over .500 on May 14, 2009, when they were 18-14 following a 5-4 win vs. Indianapolis that night.

a The Red Wings enter tonight's contest just 4.0 games back of the International League Wild Card-leading Pawtucket Red Sox.

ROAD WARRIORS: The Red Wings enter tonight's game at Lehigh Valley with an 8-game road winning streak, their longest since at least 1981 (more research needed from the crack PR staff). It must be noted, however, that the 1987 Red Wings won their final 6 road games and the 1988 Wings won their first 3 road contests for a 9-game winning streak over 2 seasons.

a The Red Wings are just 24-30 in true road games, but they have won 8 straight, 12 of their last 16, and 13 of their last 18 away from Frontier Field.

HANGING IN THERE: The Red Wings have won 3 of their last 4 games and own the best record in the IL beginning July 1 at 25-15, 2.0 games ahead of Columbus (Indians). A look at the Top-5 records since the start of July:

Rank Team Record Win %

1. 25-15 .625

2. A0 23-17 .575

3. Charlotte (White Sox) 22-17 .564

4. 23-18 .561

4 Empire A0 21-17 .553

a The Red Wings are 42-30 since sitting a season-worst 10 games below .500 at 20-30 on May 28. Going back further, Rochester is 48-37 beginning May 15 and 53-44 beginning May 3.

WINNING WAYS: At 62-60, the Red Wings are off to their best 122-game start since 2007, when they were 67-55. The 2011 and 2010 clubs were both 30 games under .500 at 46-76 at this point in the last 2 seasons. The Red Wings in 2012 are looking for their first winning season since the 2008 club went 74-70.

LET'S DO THIS: At 6-6, the Red Wings need to win 3 of their last 4 games against Lehigh Valley to get a season series win, which would be their first since the 2008 club went 11-5 against the IronPigs. After tonight's series finale at Coca-Cola Park, the 2 teams will meet for 3 at Frontier Field August 22-24.

a A victory tonight would give the Red Wings their first series win at Coca-Cola Park since they took 3 of 4 May 29 - June 1, 2010.

RECAP THAT: The Red Wings yesterday won 10-0 at Lehigh Valley for their 10 shut-out victory, their 3rd on the road. Do note one of the road shutouts was a rain-shortened 6-0 victory in 7 innings August 4 at Toledo. Rochester had 7 shut-out wins all of last year. Last night's victory marked Rochester's largest shutout on the road since a 10-0 win July 22, 2010 at Buffalo (Mets).

a Rochester yesterday hit a season-high 4 home runs, including 2 by Chris Parmelee for the 8th multi-homer game by a Red Wing this year (Parmelee owns 3 of those). The 4 homers are the Red Wings' most in a game since belting 4 July 23, 2011 at Indianapolis. Rene Rivera had 2 homers in that contest.

a Matt Carson and Clete Thomas yesterday hit consecutive home runs in the 3rd inning for the Red Wings' 3rd set of back-to-back homers. Carson and Thomas also turned the trick June 17 at Louisville (Reds) in the first inning. Thomas and Rivera have the other set from July 3 at Pawtucket in the 7th inning. Therefore, Thomas has been involved in all 3 sets of back-to-back jacks.

a The Red Wings last night scored 2 first-inning runs for the 4th time in the last 5 games.

IS THIS GUY FOR REAL?: Chris Parmelee has 11 home runs in his last 17 games beginning July 26, the most in the IL in that time and 6 ahead of the next closest players. His 23 RBI in that same span are the most in the IL as well, 6 ahead of Syracuse's (Nationals) Carlos Rivero. Parmelee leads the Red Wings with 15 homers despite playing in just 47 games, a 3rd of the 2012 schedule.

a Parmelee is batting .355 (44-for-124) with 10 doubles, 11 homers, 29 RBI, 23 walks, and a .459 on-base percentage in 32 games since being optioned from Minnesota July 5.

THIS DATE IN BASEBALL HISTORY: In 1979, Cardinals outfielder Lou Brock collects his 3,000th career hit, a single of the Cubs' Dennis Lamp in St. Louis.
