INDIANAPOLIS -- Toledo jumped out to a four-run lead and never looked back in a 6-2 win over Indianapolis Monday evening at Victory Field. The Mud Hens improve to 2-3 on the season, while the Indians fall to 2-2.
Toledo wasted no time cracking the scoreboard, plating two runs before Indianapolis even had an opportunity to bat. 2B Kevin Hooper opened the contest with a walk and 1B Chris Shelton hammered a double to right field before DH Timo Perez brought both runners plateward with a two-bagger to center.
The Mud Hens took advantage of five free passes to add a pair of runs in the third. Hooper and Shelton were both hit by a pitch before Perez and 3B Mike Hessman drew back-to-back bases on balls. Perez trotted home moments later on CF Brent Clevlen's bases-loaded walk.
Indianapolis never got in a rhythm offensively. 1B Yurendell de Caster belted the Tribe's first home of the season -- a solo shot to right center -- in the third and brought C Ryan Doumit home with an RBI groundout in the sixth, but the Toledo bullpen allowed just one unearned run over the final four frames to hang on for the victory.
Mud Hens RHP Ron Chiavacci (5.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO), who pitched for the Tribe in 2005 and 2006, picked up the win in his first decision of 2007.
Indianapolis RHP John Van Benschoten (3.1 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 1 SO) was tagged with the loss in his first outing of the season. Indians RHP Brian Rogers (2.2 IP, 1 H, 3 SO) and RHP Franquelis Osoria (2.0 IP, 1 SO) combined for 4.2 shutout innings before Toledo pushed across one insurance in the ninth.
Shelton and Perez recorded two base knocks apiece for the visitors, while Perez also registered three RBI. No individual from the home dugout had more than one hit on the night.
The two clubs return to Victory Field Tuesday night at 7 p.m., for game two of the three-game set. RHP Zach Miner is scheduled to start for Toledo, while RHP Marty McLeary is expected to get the nod for Indianapolis.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
