Gwinnett Stripers News Release

Moosic, PA - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees beat the Richmond Braves 8-5 Monday at PNC Field. The Braves finally opened the 2007 International League season after four straight weather postponements in Buffalo.

The Yankees stuck first on a two-run first-inning home run by Andy Phillips. Chris Basak knocked in a run with a single in the second to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead. Richmond rallied back in the third. Willie Harris doubled and was chased home on a double by Yunel Escobar. He scored on a Doug Clark single to trim the Yankees lead to 3-2. The Yankees bumped their lead back to 6-2 in the fourth. Shelly Duncan drilled a two-run homer and Kevin Reese knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly. Scranton took an 8-2 lead in the sixth. Reese collected another RBI with a double and scored on a single by Alberto Gonzales. The Braves rallied back in the seventh on a two-run double by Clark to cut the Yankees lead to 8-4. Richmond pushed another run across in the eighth on a sac fly by Harris and had the tying run at the plate before Ron Villone battled out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts.

Ben Kozlowski was the winning pitcher. Buddy Carlyle took the loss. Chris Britton notched a save. Five Braves had two hits, including Clark who added three RBI. Basak had three of the Yankees 12 hits. Temperature at game-time was 37 degrees. Richmond, winners of their last three Opening Day games, missed a chance to tie a club record for consecutive Opening Day wins (the Braves won four straight openers from 1992-'95).

The same two clubs square off again Tuesday in game two of their four game series. Right-hander Kevin Barry will pitch for Richmond against the Yankees Steven Jackson.

The Braves open the 2007 season at home Friday, April 13 vs. Indianapolis at 4 PM. For more information please call 359-4444 or visit www.rbraves.com.
