Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars, in conjunction with the Oakland Athletics, announced today that bullpen pitcher Jose Corchado has been sent to the Vancouver Canadians and fellow pitcher Tomas Cabaniel has been placed on the disabled list due to right shoulder tendinitis, retroactive to Monday, July 11. Returning to Geneva from Vancouver, right-handed pitcher Joe Scott has been added to the Cougars roster, bringing along with him hurler Mike Mitchell. Both Scott and Mitchell will be active for tonight's 6:30 p.m. game against the Beloit Snappers, as the Cougars kick start a seven-game homestand.
Jose Corchado departs for Vancouver after making twelve appearances out of the Cougars bullpen since arriving in late May from the Stockton Ports (High-A, California). In his second season with the team, Corchado collected one save along with thirteen strikeouts in 12.1 innings pitched for Kane County. Cabaniel, having bounced from the Cougars to the Canadians and back earlier in the season, has 25.1 innings pitched for the Cougars under his belt. With a 1-0 record, the Venezuelan boasts a 3.91 ERA and 20 strikeouts.
In his first active professional season, Joe Scott joined the Cougars on June 6 from extended spring training. Pitching just four times for Kane County, the A's sent Scott to the Canadians for the same amount of appearances before bringing him back to Geneva. Scott returns having produced a 2-0 mark with a 2.45 ERA for Vancouver. New to the Midwest League, the A's selected Mike Mitchell in the 35th round of the 2003 June Draft; however, the right-hander did not sign with the organization until November of that year. The Missouri native made his professional debut the following season in the Arizona Rookie League, tossing 13.1 innings for the A's and yielding a 1-0 record with a 1.34 ERA and seven strikeouts. Taking the mound seven times for the Canadians this season, Mitchell has generated an impeccable 0.00 ERA while garnering fives saves and six strikeouts.
In other news....
Slow off the starting block this season, 2002 first rounder Joe Blanton made up for lost time in June. Producing a 5-1 record with a 2.06 ERA in six starts during the month, the right-hander was awarded for his strong efforts by being named AL Rookie of the Month for June.
Stepping up to the plate for the first time at the Major League level this past Saturday, former Midwest League All-Star (2000) second baseman Kevin Hooper got his first big league at bat on July 9 with the Detroit Tigers. Hooper (2000-01) and fellow Cougars Alumni and Detroit Tigers Pitcher Nate Robertson (1999-2000) appeared in Kane County as part of the Florida Marlins organization
