Cougars' Offense Loud Early, Quiet Late

Geneva, IL- Cliff Pennington's first-inning home run gave the Kane County Cougars a 1-0 lead Wednesday night against the Beloit Snappers, but the offense produced only two runs the rest of the way in an 8-3 loss in front of 10,028 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. Pennington went deep off Beloit's Jay Rainville for a quick 1-0 game. After the Snappers got even against Cougars starter Ryan Webb, Myron Leslie smacked a two-run homer with Javier Herrera aboard to make it 3-1, but the Kane County offense produced only three hits the rest of the way.

The Snappers sprinted ahead with a four-run fourth against Webb and added another in the sixth. Webb (4-8) gave up six runs on six hits in his six frames. New reliever Mike Mitchell, who joined the Cougars Wednesday from Short-A Vancouver, gave up two unearned runs in the seventh when he made a pair of errors, putting Beloit up 8-3 and ensuring the win for Rainville (8-2). Game two of the three-game series is Thursday night at 7 CDT. Mike Rogers (5-5, 4.41) takes the mound for the Cougars (12-8) against left-hander Jose Mijares (4-3, 4.38) for the Snappers (10-10).
