Dayton Dragons News Release
Comstock Park, MI- With a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, the West Michigan Whitecaps (11-9, 44-46) snapped a 1-1 tie and picked up a 3-2 win in the opening game of a three game series with the Dayton Dragons (10-10, 40-50). Dayton and West Michigan entered play tied for second in the Midwest League's Eastern Division. Wednesday's win gives the Whitecaps second place outright in the Eastern Division as West Michigan had to hang on in the ninth inning to pull out the victory in front of 4,429 at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park, Michigan.
The âCaps got out in front in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring a single run off Dayton starter Carlos Bohorquez (ND), as once again the lead off walk came around the bases and hurt the Dragons. Luis Sabino picked up the free pass to start the inning off and moved to third on a single to center by Jeff Frazier. With runners on the corners and none down, Wilkin Ramirez bounced into a 5-4-3 double play that scored the run from third and gave the âCaps a 1-0 advantage.
Dayton came back to get Bohorquez off the hook with a single run to tie the game in the top half of the fifth inning. John Purdom led the inning off with a single to center and moved to third base on a single by Chris Kroski, who along with Cody Strait and Bradley Key, picked up a two hit night. With first and third and no outs, Key picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice to tie the game up.
Bohorquez lasted 5.0 innings on the night, while his counterpart for the Whitecaps, Josh Kauten (ND) lasted 7.0 innings before being removed. Neither starter factored in the decision, as Bohorquez, allowed one earned run on three hits with five K's and three walks. Kauten gave up eight hits to Dayton, allowing only one run with five strikeouts and no walks.
The game remained a 1-1 tie into the bottom of the eighth inning as the third Dragons pitcher of the night; Juan Frias (L, 0-1) began his second inning of work. A lead off single by Nick McIntyre and a one out single by Sabino put âCaps runners at first and third for Frazier. The WM left fielder drove home the pair with a gap hit to left center for a 3-1 West Michigan lead.
The Dragons made some noise in the ninth inning off closer Anthony Tomey (ND), as Strait singled to start the inning off. A walk to Purdom put runners at first and second with none down. Kroski's sac bunt attempt turned into a fielder's choice, as Strait was forced at third base for the first out of the inning. Key's second hit of the night with one down loaded the bases for Trevor Lawhorn. Tomey, was given the hook by WM Manager Matt Walbeck, who brought in P.J. Finigan (SV, 1). Lawhorn's fielder's choice grounder scored Purdom with the second Dayton run of the night and forced Key at second base for the second out of the inning. Finigan struck out Phil Gentry with the tying run at third to preserve the win for Ed Clelland (W, 4-2), who pitched a scoreless eighth inning in relief of Kauten.
The Dragons and Whitecaps play the middle game of the three game series Thursday night at Fifth Third Ball Park, with a 7:00 PM first pitch. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM carries the game live, beginning with the pre game show at 6:30 PM. RHP Homer Bailey gets the start for the Dragons, while West Michigan will counter with RHP Dallas Trahern.
