Peoria Chiefs News Release
Burlington, IA (July 13, 2005) - The Peoria Chiefs (8-12, 43-47) took advantage of some early errors and got strong pitching to beat the Burlington Bees (9-11, 43-47) 6-2 at Community Field tonight. Tonight's game is the first of a three-game series. The Chiefs now lead the season series 5-4.
Bees' starter Danny Christensen (1-4) allowed four runs, but only one earned, in 3.2 innings for the loss. In the top of the first, Christensen issued a one-out walk to Eric Patterson. With two outs, Patterson advanced all the way to third when a snap throw from catcher Damaso Espino skipped in the dirt down the right field line for an error. Jesse Schmidt followed with a single to center to drive in the run. In the third, Patterson reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, and scored on another two-out single by Schmidt. In the fourth, Drew Larsen hit a double just over the head of Brian McFall in right, and went to third when McFall misplayed the carom off the wall. Christensen got Oscar Bernard to ground right back to the mound for the first out, but walked the next two batters to load the bases. Sam Fuld hit a chopper to Rusty Brown at first base. Brown was ready to throw it home for the force out, but held on to the ball too long and threw it straight down into the dirt and it rolled all the way to the backstop for an error, allowing one to score. Patterson drove in a second run with a sacrifice fly to center and knocked Christensen out of the game. Gabe DeHoyos got Ryan Harvey to end the inning and worked 3.1 scoreless innings in relief and struck out five. Adam Rowe worked a scoreless eighth. Chad Blackwell allowed two runs in the top of the ninth. Patterson tripled and scored on a wild pitch. Larsen drove in a run with a single.
Chiefs' starter Sean Gallagher (9-3) allowed two runs on two hits in five innings for the win. The Bees got both of their runs in the bottom of the third. Darwinson Salazar walked and went to third as Cody Cure shot a single into centerfield on a hit and run play. Gallagher then walked Irving Falu to load the bases. Geraldo Valentin drove in Salazar with a base hit to right to get the Bees on the board. After a popout, Brown tied the score with a sacrifice fly to center. Gallagher got McFall to bounce out to end the inning and didn't allow another baserunner through five. Victor Ramos pitched two scoreless innings and struck out four. Adalberto Mendez and Drew Dickson finished with a scoreless inning apiece.
The Bees and Chiefs continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Patrick Green (4-7, 4.32) will start for the Bees against RH Matt Weber (4-8, 3.38) for the Chiefs. The gates open at 6:00 on a Fat Tuesdays Thirsty Thursday featuring 2-for-$3 specials on all 20 oz. bottles of Pepsi products and 12 oz. cans of beer throughout the game. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
