HARTFORD, Conn. - Kael Mouillierat scored with 2:15 left to go in overtime as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers outlasted the Hartford Wolf Pack, 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at XL Center.
Mouillierat's goal was the third grade-A chance for the Sound Tigers in the overtime frame. Scooter Vaughan just missed the net on a breakaway minutes prior and Cory Conacher hit the post on a 2-on-1 seconds before Mouillierat's goal.
The win gives the Sound Tigers 40 points on the year, as they gain a point on their divisional rival. They now have a record of 18-15-3-1.
The Wolf Pack controlled the game in the early going, but the first goal went to the Sound Tigers. After a scrum in front of the Bridgeport bench resulted in a Sound Tigers power play, Cory Conacher found the back of the net for his third goal this season. Harry Zolnierczyk and Griffin Reinhart earned the assists, as Bridgeport led 1-0.
With nearly a minute left in the first, the Sound Tigers iced the puck and were forced to keep a tired group of five on the ice. On the ensuing faceoff, a shot from Ryan Bourque bounced off several bodies in front and trickled its way past Leggio into the net. Bourque was credited with the goal, as the teams went into the locker room tied at 1-1.
Early in the second period, both Scooter Vaughan and Scott Mayfield were called for penalties, leading to a 5-on-3 for the Wolf Pack. After Vaughan was released from the box, Hartford's Michael Kostka rang a shot off the crossbar. Vaughan took the puck the other way and fed Aaron Ness, who tipped it home for the short-handed goal. Ness' fifth goal of the season was the team's fourth man down goal of the year.
Four minutes later, it was the third line working their magic in the offensive zone. Colton Gillies and Johan Sundstrom put forth a bullish forecheck, leading to a turnover by the Wolf Pack. The puck went right to John Persson, who ripped a shot from the slot to make it 3-1 Sound Tigers.
Three and a half minutes later, with the Sound Tigers down a man again, the Wolf Pack finally converted on the power play. A perfect cross-seam pass by Chris Bourque found Oscar Lindberg, who fired into an essentially empty net and made it 3-2.
Both teams struggled to get shots on net through the second, as they had combined for 23 through 40 minutes. A spirited scrap between 6-foot Brett Gallant and 6-foot-5 Dylan McIlrath also highlighted the middle frame.
The third period had just one goal, but it came 50 seconds into the period. Chris Bourque fired the puck from center ice and it eluded Leggio's blocker, going into the back of the net. The 3-3 score held until Mouillierat's wrister in overtime, as he sealed it with the second straight 2-on-1 during the 3-on-3.
The Sound Tigers complete their four-game road trip next Friday, when they head to Providence to take on the Bruins. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m.
