Providence Bruins News Release

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence Bruins lost 5-2 at home against the Portland Pirates on Sunday afternoon. The Providence losing streak expanded to five with the defeat.

After three blocked one-timers and one quick clear with the puck in the crease, the Pirates scored the first goal of the game. Brendan Shinnimin tipped a Justin Hodgman shot down through Malcom Subban's five-hole to give the visitors the lead at 11:03. It was the seventh strike of the year for the Portland winger.

The Pirates doubled their lead late in the period, when Subban slowed but could not stop another puck from finding the back of the net. For the second time, a shot from the left side of the zone beat him. Darian Dziurzynski lifted it past the Bruins netminder to double the lead at 18:49.

In the middle period, Portland scored its eighth power play goal of the season series to make it 3-0. (The Pirates have only 13 goals on the man advantage versus the rest of the league.) Henrik Sameulsson registered his sixth goal of the year only 1:38 into the frame. Alexandre Bolduc and Joel Hanley had helpers that extended the lead.

In the third, the teams combined for 52 penalty minutes, including matching 10-minute misconducts for David Warsofsky and Jordan Swarz for continuing an altercation.

Wayne Simpson scored his first AHL goal (and point) on a third attempt on Domingue from the left side. That cut the deficit to 3-1 at 12:02. Justin Florek and Matt Lindblad had the assists on the power play goal.

Less than a minute later, Colin Stuart netted his second goal of the weekend (and season) on a feed from Seth Girffith from the trapezoid. It was the second goal on as many shots for the trailing team to pull within one.

The Pirates added an insurance goal from Greg Miller shortly after a faceoff win in the offensive zone, and Bolduc added an empty-netter to seal the victory.

The Bruins' next game is at the Dunk on Friday at 7:05pm against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

PROVIDENCE SCORING:

#16 Wayne Simpson (#18 Justin Florek, #9 Matt Lindblad)

#49 Colin Stuart (#17 Seth Griffith)

PROVIDENCE GOALTENDING:
