Midland, TX - The Midland RockHounds rallied in a rainy first inning to take the series opener against the Springfield Cardinals, 5-0, before 2,732 fans at Security Bank Ballpark on Tuesday night.

The Cardinals (28-23) hold a 2.0-game lead over the Tulsa Drillers for 1st place in the North Division First Half Standings with 19 games remaining in the half.

After a dry top of the first, the rain started coming down with RHP Corey Baker (L, 2-3) on the mound in the bottom of the first. CF Brett Vertigan started the stanza by reaching on a throwing error from SS Breyvic Valera. DH J.P. Sportman followed with a single that slipped by 3B Paul DeJong, before 3B Matt Chapman loaded the bases with a walk. With the rain pouring down, 1B Viosergy Rosa collected a two-run single through the right side, followed by an RBI infield single from RF Tyler Marincov. One out later, SS Franklin Barreto bounced an RBI single through the infield, putting runners at the corners with one down for 2B Yairo Munoz. With the count full for Munoz, the umpires called for the tarp and the game went into a rain delay.

After a delay of one hour and 10 minutes, RHP Pedro Echemendia took over on the mound. Echemendia's first pitch missed for ball four to Munoz, loading the bases with one down in the first. One out later, Vertigan sliced an RBI single to center field, bringing in Marincov to cap the first-inning rally and make it a 5-0 Midland lead.

Echemendia went on to toss 4.2 scoreless relief innings, allowing just two hits with two walks while striking out four. RHP Joey Donofrio took over right where Echemendia left off, logging three scoreless and hitless innings out of the bullpen, walking one and striking out four as well.

However, the RockHounds (26-24) also received stifling relief after the delay. RHP Ben Bracewell (W, 2-0) dealt the first four innings in scoreless manner, followed by three scoreless stanzas from RHP Trey Cochran-Gill. RHP Kyle Finnegan dealt the final scoreless frame in the ninth, closing the 5-0 win for Midland.
