New York Boulders News Release
(Worcester, MA, June 10) - Pat Moran hurled 6.2 innings of no-hit ball and ended up scattering just three hits in going the distance as the Rockland Boulders downed the Worcester Tornadoes, 6-0 at Hanover Insurance Park. The Boulders took two of three from the hosts and have now won six of seven overall, including a 5-1 mark on their current eight-game road trip.
Less than 24 hours earlier, Worcester had snapped Rockland's five-game winning streak with a 7-2 decision, but Moran would have other ideas in the rubber game. After Worcester's Phil Negus and Rockland's Moran traded zeroes for the first two innings, the Boulders took the lead with a pair in the top of the third. Cole Kraft manufactured the first run with a leadoff single, stole second and moved to third on a grounder before scoring on Chris Valencia's two-out single. Negus then balked Valencia to second, which proved costly when Qualon Millender singled him in.
Moran sailed through the first four innings, not allowing a hit while fanning five and walking one. His teammates expanded the lead in the top of the fifth, with some help from their hosts. With one out, Matt Nandin singled and Jon Smith walked, with both advancing on Chris Valencia's ground out. Negus uncorked a wild pitch to bring in Nandin, and Qualon Millender's shot was misplayed by first baseman Nick Salotti, allowing Smith to come home and provide Rockland with a 4-0 cushion.
Rockland would add two more in the seventh when Matt Nandin, who went 3-for-4 on the afternoon, led off with his fourth homer of the season. Jon Smith followed with a double and later came in on Ryan Mollica's RBI single, putting the Boulders up by six. Moran continued his no-no bid until, with two out in the seventh, Alex Trezza picked up a single on a 2-2 pitch. In spite of a rising pitch count, Moran was left on the hill to finish what he started, giving up one hit in each of the last two frames before putting the finishing touches on his complete-game shutout. The right-hander showed outstanding control throughout, fanning eight Worcester batters while walking just one, facing only four batters above the minimum.
With the victory, Moran improved to 2-1 while Negus took the loss to drop to 0-3. The Boulders outhit the Tornadoes by a 10-3 margin as Millender chipped in with a pair of hits. Jose Canseco, who was rested yesterday after hitting his first homer of the season for Worcester on Friday night, went 0-for-4.
The Boulders have now posted a 5-1 record on this trip, assuring themselves of a winning mark on the eight-game trek. Rockland wraps up the road trip with games in New Jersey against the Jackals on Tuesday and Thursday, before returning to Provident Bank Park for a season-long 10-game homestand, starting on Friday, June 15. The Boulders will play three games against Worcester (June 15-17), play their first American Association foes as the Grand Prairie Air Hogs visit for four games (June 18-21), and close out with three against the Quebec Capitales (June 22-24).
