Worcester Tornadoes News Release
In the first series in Rockland that the Worcester Tornadoes played against the Boulders, Ryan Bicondoa retired the first 19 batters in a row.
Pat Moran, the starter in Sunday afternoon's game for the Rockland Boulders, decided to one-up him, not allowing a Tornadoes hit until after six and two thirds innings pitched. He eventually went the distance, not allowing a run and striking out six Tornadoes hitters, picking up his first win as the Boulders shut out the Tornadoes 6-0.
Moran's counterpart, Phil Negus, went six and two thirds himself, but gave up all six runs the Boulders scored in the game, although only five of them were earned. Negus walked four and struck out two, picking up his second loss of the season.
Cole Kraft got the scoring started in the top of the third inning when Chris Valencia knocked a looper into the outfield for a single. Qualon Millender followed Valencia with a single of his own, scoring Valencia.
Matt Nandin added to the Boulders' lead by scoring on a Negus wild pitch. Jonathan Smith then crossed the plate after Nick Salotti kicked a ground ball with two outs in the inning.
Meanwhile, Pat Moran was motoring through the Tornadoes order, but longtime catcher Alex Trezza put a spoke in Moran's wheel, hitting a sinking line drive to right-center field, breaking up Moran's no-hitter.
Nandin hit a solo home run to lead of the top of the seventh inning, then Negus gave up a double to Smith, who later scored on a Ryan Mollica RBI.
Moran did give up two hits over the next two innings, but the Tornadoes were unable to capitalize, as they were shut out for the second time of the season.
The Tornadoes fell to 8-12 on the season, good for fourth place in the Can-Am league. The Boulders picked up a game on the first place New Jersey Jackals, and now sit at 10-12 on the season.
