Moose Topple Rockford in Shootout
October 28, 2018 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose (4-4-0-0) battled the Rockford IceHogs (4-3-1-1) on Sunday night. The game took a physical tone right away when JC Lipon dropped the gloves with Dennis Gilbert. Rockford controlled the play early, putting pressure on rookie goaltender Mikhail Berdin, who was making his first AHL start. Berdin stood tall and the Moose fed off his play, taking over momentum in the second half of the period. After one, the teams looked evenly matched; each with 13 shots on net, a power play opportunity, and zero goals to show for it.
The pace picked up in the second thanks to some turnovers by both clubs. Near the midway point of game, a Peter Stoykewych shoot-in took a weird bounce off the glass behind the Rockford net. The subsequent scramble finished with Felix Girard finding Tye McGinn out front, and a quick wrister broke the deadlock. As the period wound down, Rockford pulled even again, when Tyler Sikura and Andrew Campbell broke in on a two-on-one. Sikura chose to shoot, and Campbell banged home the rebound with just over two minutes left in the second frame.
The third period maintained the physicality and speed of the first two, but also the score. Both teams had another power play opportunity but were unable to grab the lead. The best chances in overtime came with a third Rockford penalty at the 1:23 mark in the extra frame, but the IceHogs penalty kill took away any shooting lanes.
In the shootout Berdin continued his stellar debut, stopping the first two Rockford shooters he faced. Delia stopped Mason Appleton, but was beaten by Seth Griffith giving Manitoba the 1-0 shootout lead. That was enough for Berdin who turned away Dylan Sikura and secured his first win.
