Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Sunday afternoon 6-1 on their ninth annual "Pink in the Rink" game. The P-Bruins got a hat-trick from Cameron Hughes, two goals from Zach Senyshyn and a goal from Trent Frederic goals while Dan Vladar made his fourth start of the season in net.
Providence earned an early power play and Senyshyn took advantage to give his team the team. Off a long entry pass from Hughes, Senyshyn turned on his jets up the right side and beat Chris Gibson 1:40 into play making it 1-0. Frederic extended their lead to 2-0 with just under five minutes left on his fourth goal of the season. Anton Blidh won a battle for the puck in the right wing corner and found Frederic alone at the halfboards. With room to shoot, he snapped a beautiful long-range shot through Gibson and sent the P-Bruins to the locker room up by two.
Bridgeport thought they cracked the scoreboard early in the second, but their goal was waved off due to a high stick. From there, the period became the Cameron Hughes show as he needed less than ten minutes to record his first career hat-trick. He started his scoring barrage with help from Jan Kovar at 3:39. Kovar intercepted a clearing attempt by the Sound Tigers and turned defense into offense. He centered the puck to Hughes who tapped it in backdoor to make it 3-0 Providence. Just 3:02 later, Hughes cleaned up a rebound to pick up his second tally of the night. Hughes, Austin Fyten and Colby Cave created pressure in front of Gibson and eventually the puck snuck out to Hughes just inside the circle. He fired a wrister top-corner that Gibson never saw and Providence opened it up to 4-0.
Gibson was pulled in favor of former P-Bruin Jeremy Smith in net as the Sound Tigers tried to switch up the momentum after the fourth goal. Seth Helgeson finally put Bridgeport on the board at 12:12 of the second, but Providence again responded with Hughes. He earned a penalty shot at 12:43 and capitalized, walking in and beating Smith's glove hand for his fourth goal of the season and third of the night. Senyshyn capped the scoring with a minute left in the second on a fortunate bounce. After Cave took a shot that Gibson blocked out to the right, the puck hit Senyshyn who was well positioned in front and went in for his second of the night. The third period was physical but scoreless, as Providence went on to a 6-1 victory.
Vladar stopped 28-29 shots in his first victory of the season. Gibson stopped 14-18 shots before getting pulled while Smith stopped 18-20 after entering in the second. Providence was 1-4 on the power play and 0-6 on the penalty kill. The P-Bruins are back in action next weekend as they travel to Charlotte Friday for a two-game series with the Checkers.
