LAST NIGHT'S THRILLER:
Yesterday the Chocolate and White earned a 4-3 shootout victory over the rival Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at Giant Center. Hershey never led in the contest, but had an answer to each Wilkes-Barre/Scranton strike. Mike Sgarbossa had a goal and an assist, and Riley Barber also struck for his first goal of the season. Beck Malenstyn scored in the third period to tie the game, 3-3. Hershey outshot the Penguins 6-1 in overtime, but Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goalie Tristan Jarry stood on his head to force a shootout. Barber and Shane Gersich scored in the shootout for Hershey, while Ilya Samsonov stopped both shots he face to give Hershey the victory. The win was the first of Samsonov's AHL career. The Bears out shot the Penguins, 39-22.
LAST YEAR VERSUS LEHIGH:
Hershey' season series last year with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms wasn't kind to the Chocolate and White. Hershey was just 2-7-1-2 in the 12 games with Lehigh Valley last year, including failing to win a single contest at the PPL Center in Allentown. Hershey's top returning scorer in the season series is Riley Barber, who scored seven points (three goals, four assists) in the 12 games versus the Phantoms. Nicolas Aube-Kubel led Lehigh Valley with 12 points (seven goals, five assists) versus Hershey last season.
BECK BREAKS THROUGH:
Forward Beck Malenstyn scored his first AHL goal last night in Hershey's victory. The rookie forward spent last season with the Swift Current Broncos of the WHL, scoring 29 points (17 goals, 12 assists) in 38 games. He also added 11 points in the playoffs as the Broncos won a WHL Championship. Malenstyn previously played for former Bears coach Mark French with the Calgary Hitmen, scoring a personal-best 32 goals and 56 points in 2016-17. Malenstyn was selected by the Washington Capitals in the 5th round of the 2016 NHL Draft.
KILLER PENALTY KILL:
A perfect 3-for-3 night on the penalty kill in last night's win over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton kept Hershey's penalty kill rolling. The Bears have been perfect on the penalty kill in the past three games, going 13-for-13. Dating back to last Saturday, Hershey has killed 17 consecutive penalties. After a slow start, Hershey has improved to 79.5% on the penalty kill. Lehigh Valley has also seen struggles with a man down, as the Phantoms sit 30th in the AHL with a penalty kill of just 71.8%.
BEARS/PHANTOMS CONNECTIONS:
The Phantoms roster features former Bear Chris Conner. The veteran forward skated with Hershey in 2014-15, scoring 52 points. Lehigh Valley assistant coach Kerry Huffman is also a former Bear, playing parts of three seasons with Hershey in 1986-87, 1988-89, and 1990-91. Hershey forward Derek Hulak and defender Logan Pyett are each technically former Phantoms, however neither player actually ever dressed for the black and orange. Hulak signed with Lehigh Valley for the 2016-17 season, but an injury caused him to miss the entire year. Pyett was signed in the Flyers organization in the 2015-16 campaign, but was diagnosed with sarcoma in the preseason.
