Peoria Rivermen News Release
For the first time since Nov. 5, the Peoria Rivermen have dropped three straight games after a 4-1 loss to the Manitoba Moose on Tuesday at the MTS Center. In an offensively driven game that saw a total of 79 shots, Manitoba managed to capitalize on several fortuitous bounces in cruising to their third victory over the Rivermen and extend their season-best winning streak to five games.
Manitoba's Sergei Shirokov got the scoring started at 15:33 of the first period while the teams played 4-on-4 hockey. After a poke-check off the stick of Joe Perrault, Shirokov grabbed the loose puck and placed it underneath the right hand of Peoria goaltender Ben Bishop. It was Shirokov's ninth goal of the season and second in as many games against the Rivermen.
The second period picked up right where the first left off while tempers began to flare as well. At 9:59 of the second, Winnipeg native Ryan Reaves and Manitoba's Garth Murray engaged in the first fight of the game. Just one second later, Anthony Peluso and Tommy Maxwell dropped the gloves directly off of the faceoff.
The Moose extended their lead to 2-0 with just 46.9 seconds left in the second period on another favorable bounce. Lee Sweatt took a shot from the point that glanced off of Reaves' stick and sailed into the air over the head of Bishop. The Rivermen goalie, who went down to make an initial save, could not readjust quickly enough and the puck landed in the net behind him. Victor Oreskovich and Bill Sweatt recorded the assists on the goal.
Manitoba continued to add insurance goals as Jonas Andersson ran the score to 3-0 at the 2:06 mark of the third period with a helping pass from Guillaume Desbiens.
Later, Tommy Maxwell scored on the power play at 9:38 of the third, following Graham Mink's slashing and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.
Peoria avoided being shutout for the second time this season however when Derek Nesbitt slapped a rebound past the right pad of Manitoba's goaltender Eddie Lack at 14:08 of the third period. After receiving a pass from Dean Arsene, Dave Spina flipped a backhand shot on goal that bounced off of Lack's chest protector and right to Nesbitt. Nesbitt's goal was his ninth of the season and was the final marker of the game.
Lack finished with 33 saves in picking up the win. Manitoba is now on a five-game win-streak and Lack has won a personal best five straight. Bishop falls to 9-8-2 on the season and suffered his first loss on the road since Nov. 9 at Rockford.
Peoria is now 0-3-0 against the Moose this season, and 0-5-1 in their last six games in Winnipeg.
The Rivermen remain second in the West Division with 43 points, two behind division leading San Antonio.
The team returns home to Carver Arena for a New Years Eve contest against the Milwaukee Admirals this Friday, with a 6:05pm start time.Tickets to Friday's game can be purchased for just $11 to ring in 2011 at the Peoria Civic Center box office from noon until 4 p.m. For more information visit www.rivermen.net or call (309) 676-1040.
