NORFOLK, Va. - Mark Barberio sent the game to overtime with his game-tying goal late in the third period, but the Norfolk Admirals (18-7-5-2) fell in a shootout to the Charlotte Checkers (18-10-1-3), 3-2, on Tuesday night at Norfolk Scope Arena. Alex Berry also scored for Norfolk while goaltender Dustin Tokarski made 35 saves through regulation and overtime.
The Admirals opened scoring 12:42 into the first period with Berry's tenth goal of the season. Marc-Antoine Pouliot entered the zone with speed down the left wing, deking around a defender in the slot before dropping a pass to Blair Jones. Jones sent a feed across the crease to Berry, and Berry shot the puck past the left leg of Charlotte goaltender Justin Pogge for a 1-0 Norfolk lead.
The Checkers took the lead with a quick pair of goals midway through the second stanza. Jonathan Matsumoto tied the game at 1-1 at 13:35 when his shot from the right circle got past Tokarski glove-side.
Jacob Micflikier gave the visitors the 2-1 lead 27 seconds later off a faceoff. Drayson Bowman sent a backhand shot from the slot that Micflikier tipped through the legs of Tokarski at 14:02.
Barberio tied the game at 2-2 with 3:10 remaining in regulation. Stefano Giliati centered the puck from the right circle to Barberio, who was streaking toward the goalmouth from the slot. Barberio redirected the puck past Pogge for his third goal of the season.
In the shootout, Pouliot scored Norfolk's lone goal while both Brett Carson and Zac Dalpe converted for Charlotte to give the visitors the victory.
Dustin Tokarski (37 shots, 35 saves) was saddled with the shootout loss. Justin Pogge (34 shots, 32 saves) got the win.
