Manitoba Moose News Release
Justin Morrison had a goal and an assist as five different Moose players scored and Wade Flaherty made 30 saves to lead Manitoba to a 5-2 victory over the Milwaukee Admirals Thursday night.
For the first time in a month, Wade Flaherty got the start in goal for the second consecutive game for Manitoba. Brian Finley got the nod for Milwaukee once again.
The Moose had a good scoring chance right off the start when Lee Goren fed Jeff Heerema breaking into the Milwaukee zone but his redirection went wide of the goal.
Milwaukee ran into penalty trouble in the first, tilting the majority of play in the opening frame to Milwaukee's end of the ice.
The penalties finally caught up with the Ads as Manitoba took a 2-0 lead with a pair of powerplay goals 34 seconds apart late in the first period. Josh Green put home a rebound after a Nolan Baumgartner point shot was stopped by Finley during a five-on-three opportunity. Danny Groulx got the second assist for his first point as a Moose. After the goal, the Moose broke back into the Admirals zone and Justin Morrison completed a nice passing play by firing a shot past Finley. Heerema was in the corner of the zone and fed Morrison in front for the one-timer.
Shots on goal after the first period were 8-6 in favour of the Moose.
The Admirals came out strong in the second, taking the play to Manitoba in the early going.
Sparks started to fly in the middle frame. Paul Brown and Alexandre Burrows dropped the gloves. The fight was initially even but Brown had the advantage late in the battle with several clean shots on Burrows to knock him to the ice.
On the next shift, Peter Sarno and Jesse Schultz broke down the ice on a two-on-one. Sarno fed a cross-ice pass to Schultz who held onto the puck momentarily before rifling the puck low gloveside on Finley.
Milwaukee had a great opportunity to get back into the game after penalties to Groulx and Bieksa gave them a two-man advantage.
The Moose successfully killed off the penalties and drew one of their own near the end of the Milwaukee powerplay when Cam Severson pushed Kent Huskins into the boards.
Milwaukee scored their first of the game midway through the second. Suter flicked the puck on goal and it was deflected in front by Pivko. Flaherty made the initial save but Brendan Yarema picked the puck up behind the net and wrapped around to put it in.
The Admirals almost scored again but Flaherty stood tall, stopping Bryan Lundbohm on the rush in close.
Milwaukee was dominating the middle frame, outshooting the Moose 10-3 in the first 15 minutes of the period but it was Jimmy Roy who scored the game's fifth goal to give his club some breathing room.
Roy fired a shot from the right faceoff circle that was stopped by Finley but Roy charged in to pick up his own rebound and fire it behind the Milwaukee netminder.
After two periods, the Moose held a 4-1 lead while Milwaukee had a 21-15 advantage in shots.
Seamus Kotyk came in relief of Finley at the start of the third.
Milwaukee made it 4-2 5:22 into the third. Dan Hamhuis fed the puck behind the net to Gamache, then skated in front to pick up the puck and fire it in.
The Moose came right back and scored to move ahead 5-2. Alexandre Burrows picked up the puck behind the net and wrapped around to beat Kotyk for the fifth Manitoba goal.
Cory Pecker had a great chance to get his first goal as a Moose but was upended and fell into the Milwaukee net before he could get a shot away.
In a pair of unlikely combatants, Simon Gamache and Peter Sarno squared off at centre ice for a fight. The battle lasted several minutes as the two players traded blows before Gamache eventually took down Sarno.
The fights continued several minutes later when Jimmy Roy fought Cam Severson. Severson got some blows in on Roy but Jimmy managed to take down the Admirals forward.
The final shot count in the game was 32-23 in favour of the Admirals.
