Moose Edged By Heat, 2-1
March 30, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose suffered a 2-1 loss to the Abbotsford Heat in front of 5,988 fans at the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre on Tuesday night. Marco Rosa scored the lone goal for Manitoba while Cory Schneider stopped 41 of 43 shots in the loss.
Mario Bliznak's hooking penalty at 5:27 put Abbotsford on the first powerplay of the game. Despite bringing their shot count to seven on the man-advantage, the Heat couldn't beat starting goaltender Cory Schneider during the short two-minutes.
The Heat and Moose swapped powerplays near the midway point of the first period, but neither team could capitalize with an additional attacker. The third time was a charm for the Heat, when they benefited from their third man-advantage of the night. With Taylor Ellington in the sin bin for holding, John Rheault smacked the puck through traffic and over Schneider to take a one-goal lead. After 20 minutes of play, the Moose led the Heat 14-6 in the shot department.
The Heat suffered a bench minor for too many men, served by Radek Smolenak, and the Moose embarked on their second powerplay at 5:31 of the second period. Planted in the opposing zone, Marco Rosa smacked the puck into the open cage to knot the game at one.
By the midway point of the third period, the Heat had control of the shot clock with 39 attempts to Manitoba's 18. At 13:51, the Heat broke the tie when David Van Der Gulik snuck behind Manitoba's defence and potted the puck between Schneider's five-hole for a 2-1 tally.
With two minutes left in the game, the Moose were putting extra pressure on David Shantz in hopes to knot the score. With Schneider out of his crease and an extra attacker on the ice, the Moose fought for a second goal but time expired and the Heat stole two points from the visiting Manitoba team.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Moose will visit Toronto for a doubleheader against the Marlies.
