SIOUX FALLS- Sioux Falls Pheasants starter Ben Moore has added icing to the cake of another incredible season in a Pheasants uniform.
In his final start of 2011 on Sunday at Sioux Falls Stadium, Moore tied the franchise record for wins in a season and set a career-high for wins as the Pheasants hung on for a 8-4 victory over the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
The Pheasants' ace kept the Goldeyes' offense in check despite pitching with runners on base in every inning. The right-hander gave up three runs while scattering nine hits with three strikeouts in five-plus innings.
"It was unexpected," said Moore, regarding his ascent to the top of the pitching ranks in the American Association. "When I came in, I thought indy ball was terrible, and I had a rude awakening my first year. I'm lucky that [Pheasants manager Steve Shirley] saw something in me. The last two years have been special."
Moore (13-4), who has already broken several franchise and league records this month, also tied an American Association record for most career wins (39, Charlie Ruud, St. Paul).
"Ben's been fantastic," Shirley said. "I mean, he's got 13 wins. That's pretty stinking good."
Reggie Abercrombie continued to ravage the Goldeyes' pitching staff, going 4-for-5 with three doubles, two runs scored and an RBI. In the first two games of the series, Abercrombie has tallied seven extra-base hits.
The Pheasants took control of the game early, scoring runs in each of the first four innings, including a three-run third highlighted by a two-out, two run single from Joe Anthonsen. When Abercrombie scored on a wild pitch in the fourth, the Birds built a 6-0 lead over the listless Goldeyes.
The Winnipeg bats awoke in the middle innings. An RBI single from Kody Kaiser plated the Goldeyes' first run in the fifth. In the sixth, Louis Ott drilled a two-run double to chase Moore and cut the Pheasants lead to 6-3.
The Goldeyes continued to climb back into in the seventh, when Jon Weber scored on a passed ball to bring Winnipeg to within two runs.
The bullpen trio of Ryan Fleckenstein, Dan McDaniel and Aaron combined for four innings of one-run baseball, shutting the door on the Goldeyes.
"We got contributions from all parts of the game," Shirley said. "It was just a good win against a good team."
The Pheasants have beaten Winnipeg in six straight contests at the Birdcage.
Luis Villareal (7-4) took the loss, pitching 6 1/3 innings while giving up six runs, four earned, on 10 hits with seven strikeouts.
The win moves the Pheasants to 42-55 on the year.
The Birds look to clinch the final series of the season in the third game of the four-game series, starting at 7:05 p.m. on Monday, August 29, at Sioux Falls Stadium.
