Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

FT. WORTH, Tx.---Shreveport-Bossier took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning Sunday evening at LaGrave Field, but Ft. Worth scored a league record 13 runs in the inning, including 12 straight with two outs to defeat the Captains 14-3. The Cats sent 18 men to the plate and pounded out 12 hits in the frame, leading to Shreveport-Bossier's sixth straight loss.

Ft. Worth's 13-run inning was one more than St. Paul hit on July 28, 2007.

A John Allen RBI single off Captains starter Robert Bono (L, 1-4) made it 2-1. With runners on first and third and two outs, Cory Morales hit a two-strike single to tie the game. Aljay Davis' base hit would score Clifton Thomas to give the Cats a one-run lead. Then the floodgates opened, as Ft. Worth put the next 10 men on base (14 straight overall) to score another 10 times in the frame.

Will Calhoun's two-run single off Jameson Maj put Ft. Worth up 5-2. The Cats would open things up when Marcos Rodriguez blasted a three-run homer to rightfield off Maj for his fourth home run of the year. Later in the inning Thomas would add a two-run double. Steve Vranau hit a two-run single after Davis hit reached base for the second time in the inning on a dropped third strike. Vranau's hit made it 13-2.

Bono retired the first two batters he faced in each of the first five innings before allowing the first six runs in the sixth. Captains pitchers held the Cats scoreless in all six innings in which they retired the leadoff hitter. Bono lasted 5.2 innings, giving up six runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out four. Maj didn't record an out and allowed six runs (three earned) on six hits.

Shreveport-Bossier scored the game's first run in the fourth off Cats starter James Brandhorst (W, 2-0). Chad Gabriel singled and stole second and third before scoring on Brian Peterson's two-out single. The Captains would steal seven bases in the game to give them a total of 150 for the year.

In the top of the sixth, they made it 2-0 on an Andres Rodriguez sacrifice fly, which again scored Gabriel who doubled to start the inning. Brandhorst lasted six innings, giving up two runs on three hits, walking two and striking out six.

A Jonathan Johnson RBI single in the seventh made it 13-3. Ft. Worth would plate a run on Aljay Davis' sacrifice fly in the eighth to bring the score to 14-3.

For the second straight night, Gabriel was the only Captain with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with two runs. The Cats Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs. John Allen went 3-for-4 with a run and two RBIs. Allen has now reached base safely in 10 of 11 plate appearances in the series.

Shreveport-Bossier has dropped six straight and fallen to a season-low ten games below .500 at 44-54 and 17-31 on the road. The Cats have won five of six and are now 47-51 overall and 26-22 at home. With the win, the Cats ensure a second-place finish in the American Association South Division, meaning the Captains can finish no higher than third.

Shreveport-Bossier sends righthander Josh Strawn (3-3, 4.10) to the mound Monday for the second-to-last game of the season against Ft. Worth righty Nick DeBarr (4-6, 4.37). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
