Sioux Falls Canaries News Release
WICHITA, Kan. - Sioux Falls Pheasants starting pitcher Ben Moore established a new franchise record for strikeouts in a season on Monday night, but the Wichita Wingnuts completed a three-game sweep of the Pheasants with a 9-5 victory. The Pheasants dropped their fourth consecutive game, the most this season.
Moore (10-7) struck out four batters to raise his season total to 111. He broke the previous record of 109 set by Jamie Ybarra in 1994 and Pat Mahomes in 2007. He also tied the American Association record set by Fort Worth's Cory Walters in 2006.
Moore has 318 career strikeouts with the Sioux Falls franchise, second only to Richard Hyde (546). This season marks the fourth straight season where Moore has recorded more than 100 strikeouts.
Wichita pulled even with the Pheasants for first place in the second-half division race. Both teams are 22-13. The loss completed a 2-6 road trip for the Pheasants, who still have the league's best mark at 54-29 overall.
Wichita scored twice in the first inning on four hits and never lost the lead. The Pheasants notched a pair of runs in the fourth inning, but Michael Bell hit a three-run home run in the fifth and Ryan Patterson hit a solo shot in the sixth for a 6-2 lead. Patterson was 4-for-5 with two RBI. He finished a triple shy of the cycle.
Moore left after the sixth inning and allowed six runs on six hits. He walked two. The Wingnuts tallied three more in the eighth off the Pheasants bullpen
Joe Anthonsen, Eddy Rodriguez and Beau Torbert each had two hits for the Pheasants, but the Pheasants stranded 13 runners on base. Sean Teague (3-3) earned the victory for the Winguts and Brandon Mathes earned a two-inning save.
An additional franchise record fell when Brandon Sing drew his second walk of the game. It was his 67th of the season, one better than Grant Richardson's mark in 2008.
The Pheasants return home for a three-game series with the St. Paul Saints at 7:05 p.m. on Tuesday, August 17. It's a Double Play Tuesday. Fans can purchase any two tickets for the price of one.
