Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
LINCOLN, Neb. - Lincoln Saltdogs righthander Jim Paduch was not affected by the steady rain that fell throughout the last half of Monday night's game at Haymarket Park, as he pitched eight solid innings to defeat the Shreveport-Bossier Captains 7-2.
Lincoln (46-39, 17-20 2nd half) got out to a good start against Richard Salazar (8-4) in the first inning, with three singles, including an RBI hit from Juan Camacho to give the Saltdogs an early lead. An inning later, the eight and nine hitters in the lineup, Albenis Machado and Pat Trettel, who each had solid games, had back-to-back doubles to make it 2-0.
Paduch (8-6) worked around a leadoff walk in the first, pitched a perfect second, and then got around a single and a walk in the third, and a one-out walk in the fourth. With the rain coming down in the fifth inning, Brian Nichols legged out an infield hit, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on Paduch's pickoff throw that hit the shortstop Machado in the knee and bouned away. Mike Provencher's drive to right-center was run down by Rafael Alvarez, but it scored Nichols for the first Captains run.
But after Nichols' hit, the Captains (47-37, 18-19) only had three more baserunners against Paduch, although Brian Peterson's two-out homer in the eighth closed the gap to 5-2.
The Captains' deficit got that high because Salazar could not get out of the sixth inning, despite having a season-high-tying eight strikeouts for the second straight start. With two outs and no one on, Machado reached on an infield single before Trettel hit one through the left side, bringing up Gavin Dickey, who smashed a three-run homer to center to essentially put the game away.
After Machado and Trettel hit back-to-back home runs leading off the bottom of the eighth to cap the scoring, Tycen PoVey got three groundouts in the ninth to finish the Captains' fourth loss in a row.
Notes: Eight of the nine Lincoln hitters had at least one hit.Machado, Trettel and Dickey had seven total hits and six RBIs.Christopher Garcia, who walked and had two singles, was the only Captains player with at least two hits, while Peterson, who also had a walk, was the only other Captain to reach base at least twice. The Captains, who average 5.6 runs per game, have scored three runs or fewer in five of Salazar's 16 starts, all losses (including all four of Salazar's).
The Shreveport-Bossier Captains continue their three-game road series with the Lincoln Saltdogs, on Tuesday, August 17, at 7:05 p.m. The Captains return home to finish their regular season Fair Grounds Field schedule with a three-game series against the Pensacola Pelicans, starting on Friday, August 20, at 7:05 p.m. That night is GAP Broadcasting "Practice Safe Text" Night, as well as Willis-Knighton Mouth Cancer Awareness Night and BPCC Night at the ballpark.
