St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN (August 16, 2010) - It was only a matter of time before St. Paul Saints reliever Matt Meyer garnered league honors for his streak of outstanding pitching performances. Meyer was named American Association Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week, for the week of August 9-15, for his most recent outings that helped lead the Saints to a 5-2 record on a seven-game homestand at Midway Stadium.

In the two series against the Sioux City Explorers and the Lincoln Saltdogs, Meyer went 2-0 with two saves in 6.1 scoreless innings, surrendering just one hit, while walking three and striking out 12.

Since making his first appearance for the Saints on June 27, Meyer has pitched 21.1 scoreless innings. Meyer's current streak is good for the Saints franchise record for most consecutive scoreless innings pitched, surpassing Kyle Foster's previous mark of 20.0 consecutive scoreless innings pitched back in 2008.

The 6'4" lefty from Rochester, MN, may have a 0.00 ERA, but that's not the only staggering number on his stat line. Meyer has struck out 42 batters during his stint with the Saints, meaning he sits down about two batters in every inning he pitches. He doesn't get hit much either - in fact, he has only surrendered six hits all season.

Meyer has brought a stabilizing presence to the Saints pitching staff and has starred in his role as the team's closer with nine saves in nine opportunities. It should come as no surprise that the team holds a 25-18 record since signing Meyer.

Meyer's Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week honor is the third time a member of the Saints has been recognized with an award this season. Josh Alley received Player of the Week honors (June 12-18), while Zach Peterson was named the Teamline Pitcher of the Month in July.
