Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY - Touted lefthander Jacob McGee has been promoted to the Montgomery Biscuits from Vero Beach (A-Advanced - Florida State League), the Biscuits announced today.

McGee, 21, was drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the fifth round of the 2004 June Amateur Draft out of Reed High School in Sparks, Nevada. He finished the 2004 season as rookie-level Princeton's Pitcher of the Year, leading the staff in victories and tying for the team lead in strikeouts. A season later, the southpaw ranked second in the New York-Penn League in strikeouts and was named the 9th-best prospect in the league by Baseball America.

In 2006, the Nevadan was named a Midwest League All-Star and led both the Rays' minor league system and the Midwest League in strikeouts, having fanned 171 batters in 134 innings. In B.A.'s Best Tools survey, he was named as possessing the Best Fastball in the league and entered the 2007 season as the Devil Ray's 5th-best prospect, behind only Delmon Young, Evan Longoria, Reid Brignac and Jeff Niemann.

McGee followed up those accolades by earning a spot on the Florida State League All-Star team this season. In 21 total starts with Vero Beach, he posted a 5-4 record with a 2.93 ERA, striking out 145 batters in 116 2/3 innings. Only three other pitchers in the Minor Leagues --- Clay Bucholz (Pawtucket, AAA), Will Inman (San Antonio, AA) and Gio Gonzalez (Birmingham, AA) --- have compiled more strikeouts this season.

In its most recent issue, Baseball America named Jake McGee the 2nd-best lefthanded pitching prospect in the minors, behind only Los Angeles' Clayton Kershaw.

McGee will start for the Biscuits on Thursday night against the Chattanooga Lookouts in the second game of a five-game series at Riverwalk Stadium.

To make room for McGee on the roster, Tampa Bay has assigned righthander Derek Feldkamp to Vero Beach (A-Advanced - Florida State League). Feldkamp went 2-7 with a 6.52 ERA in 22 appearances (eight starts) for Montgomery this season.

Montgomery presently has 24 players on its active roster and one player on the disabled list.
