Cleveland Monsters News Release

Despite a valiant late flurry in an attempt to tie the game, the Lake Erie Monsters (27-25-2-7) fell short by a 2-1 score against the Grand Rapids Griffins (34-19-2-2) Saturday night in Grand Rapids. Thomas Pock scored the lone Lake Erie goal, as the Monsters were back on the road following an eight-game home stand.

Although the first period didn't yield a goal, Grand Rapids managed to kill three Monsters power plays in the opening frame.

The Griffins scored twice in the second period to take a 2-0 lead into the second intermission. First, Jeff Hoggan batted in a loose puck at 5:51 of the period, and then Louis-Marc Aubry intercepted a Lake Erie clearing attempt and immediately fired the puck into the Monsters goal at the 11:20 mark. In the final minute of the second period, Monsters goalie Calvin Pickard stopped Hoggan on a penalty shot attempt.

In the third, Pock scored his 10th goal of the season on a blast from the point at 3:58, assisted by Mike Sgarbossa and Markus Lauridsen.

The Monsters woud muster a flurry of shots in the final minute with the goalie pulled in favor of the extra attacker, butGriffins goalie Petr Mrazek stood his ground.

Pickard stopped 25 of 27 shots in the loss; he is 16-15-5. Mrazek stopped 27 of 28 Monsters shots, and is 20-9-1 on the season.

The Monsters are back in action Wednesday night in Toronto, with all the action beginning at 7:00 PM and airing live on AM 1220 WHKW.
