March 9, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, ME - The Portland Pirates fell on overtime for the second consecutive night, this time dropping a 4-3 decision to the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins in front of 5,527 at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The Penguins took advantage of a late penalty to score just 38 seconds into overtime.

The Pirates were given 4 power play opportunities in the first period, but failed to convert, while the Penguins made the most of their man advantage. Joseph Morrow's shot from the top of the right circle found its way through traffic and past Pirates' starter Mike Lee to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead. Just over two minutes later Jayson Megna doubled the Penguins lead, redirecting a Chad Kolarik shot for his fourth of the season at 9:48.

The Pirates responded in the second period with a pair of quick goals of their own. At the 14:13 mark of the second, Maxim Goncharov sent a blast from the point on Penguins' starter Brad Thiessen, allowing Chris Conner to capitalize on the rebound for his 12th goal of the season. The Pirates would strike again just 1:27 later, this time on the power play, with Chris Brown putting a shot over the shoulder of Thiessen to tie the game at two. The goal was the 21st of the season for the Portland rookie and his 10th power play tally on the year.

Brown struck again early in the third, picking up a mishandled puck for a breakaway to beat Thiessen low for his team leading 22nd goal of the season. The goal came just 1:37 into the period. Zach Sill responded for the Penguins at the 3:47 mark of the period. Sill poked a rebound by a scrambling Lee to even the game at three, where it remained for the duration of regulation. As the result of a Maxim Goncharov cross checking call with ten seconds left in regulation, the Pirates started overtime on the penalty kill. They were be unable to kill that penalty as Lee was beat to the rebound of a Paul Thompson shot by Chad Kolarik, who buried the game winner just 38 second into overtime.

The game was a testy affair, with the teams combining for 76 penalty minutes, including 34 penalty minutes assessed after the game concluded. The Pirates Darian Dziurzynski and Mike Lee both picked up game misconducts, while the Penguins' Bobby Farnham eclipsed the 200 penalty minute mark for the year with 12 minutes of his own following the game.

The Pirates fall to 33-20-3-2 on the season, while Mike Lee drops to 6-2-1-0 after stopping 41 of 45 shots. The Penguins improve to 31-25-2-1, with Brad Thiessen improving to 13-10-1-4.

The Pirates get back to action tomorrow afternoon as they head to Worcester to face the Sharks for the final time this season. Puck drop is set for 3 PM from the DCU Center in Worcester. The game can be heard on 95.5 and 95.9 WPEI in the Portland area, 92.7FM and 100.7 FM WOXO FM in the Lewiston/Auburn area, and online on the WLOB radio player and AHL Live.
