Portland Pirates News Release

Portland, Maine - Former Portland Pirates forward Jeff Nelson became the 17th member of the Pirates Hall of Fame presented by Unum during the March 9th game between the Pirates and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Nelson joins his brother Todd as a member of the Pirates Hall of Fame.

Started in 1999, the Portland Pirates Hall of Fame, presented by Unum, was created to honor those individuals who had played a significant role in Pirates' history, both on and off the ice, and who have excelled in their careers in hockey. In order for a player to be eligible, he must have skated in at least 40 Pirates' games and, at the time of his induction, have been at least one year removed from playing the game. Since the inaugural class of Andrew Brunette, Byron Dafoe, and Olaf Kolzig were inducted in 1999, 13 other players, coaches, and members of the Pirates community have been inducted into the Hall of Fame, with Brad Church becoming the 16th member in 2012.

Nelson, a 6 foot, 180 pound center from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, was a member of the Pirates' '93-94 inaugural season. During the '93-'94 season, Nelson compiled 34 goals and 73 assists, for a total of 107 points, setting the team's single season assists and points records that he still holds today. Nelson was named the 2nd Pirates captain in team history during the '94-'95 season. During his Pirates career, Nelson amassed 124 goals, 222 assists and 346 points, which is second in team history behind Hall of Famer Kent Hulst. Nelson spent time with the Washington Capitals of the NHL during his career, playing in 52 games and posting a line of 3-8-11 in his NHL career.

Nelson was elected to the Pirates Hall of Fame through a fan vote both online and in person during the months of January and February. More than 400 Pirates fans cast votes for the 2013 Hall of Fame.

"I'd like to thank the Pirates Organization. I'd like to thank my coaches and teammates. I've made a home here for a number of years and thank you for your support and your encouragement. ...[and] my family for your patience and encouragement." Nelson said during the induction ceremony that took place during the first intermission.

The current Pirates Hall of Fame can be viewed online at www.portlandpirates.com/hall-of-fame, and a tribute to Nelson's time with the Pirates can be viewed on the Pirates' YouTube Channel which can be found at www.youtube.com/portlandpiratesAHL.
