Cleveland Monsters News Release
Mitchell Heard's goal at 2:08 of overtime sealed a 5-4 win for the Lake Erie Monsters (14-12-2-3) over the Milwaukee Admirals (15-11-2-3) Tuesday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Andrew Agozzino scored twice for the Monsters, and Paul Carey and Stefan Elliott each scored their team-leading ninth goals of the season. Calvin Pickard returned from the National Hockey League and earned the victory in net for the Monsters, who return home to play Oklahoma City on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Stefan Elliott ignited the Monsters first period scoring with a wrist shot from the right circle that beat Milwaukee's Marek Mazanec at 7:52 of the opening frame. Max Noreau and Paul Carey assisted on the goal, which was Elliott's ninth goal of the season. Under two minutes later at the 9:21 mark, Paul Carey swatted in an airborne puck from just outside the goal crease to give the Monsters a 2-0 lead on a power play. Carey's ninth goal was assisted by Noreau and Mike Sgarbossa. At 16:35 of the first period, Andrew Agozzino received a deflected puck on his stick just inside the right circle, and quickly snapped the puck past Mazanec on a power play to give the Monsters a 3-0 lead with assists to Carey and Sgarbossa.
Milwaukee cut into the Monsters lead in the second period and pulled to within a goal before the end of the frame. Viktor Stalberg snuck a puck past Calvin Pickard on a breakaway at 2:00 of the second period, and Mike Liambas scored on a rebound for the Admirals at 7:31 of the second period. After 40 minutes, the Monsters led by a 3-2 score.
Pontus Aberg streaked in from the right side and sent a puck top-shelf to beat Calvin Pickard and tie the game 3-3 for Milwaukee at 1:18 of the third period. Late in the third period, the Monsters regained a lead when Mike Sgarbossa spotted Andrew Agozzino driving the net. Agozzino took the pass, cruised in alone, and beat Mazanec for his seventh goal of the season, giving the Monsters a 4-3 lead at 17:44 of the third period. Bruno Gervais also assisted on the goal.
With the goalie pulled and 47.9 seconds remaining in regulation, Aberg tied the game at 4-4 for Milwaukee to force overtime.
In the overtime period, Carey fed a puck toward the net that found Mitchell Heard, and Heard backhanded the puck past Mazanec to secure a 5-4 win for the Monsters at 2:08 of overtime. The goal was Heard's third of the season, and was also assisted by Colin Smith.
Calvin Pickard won his fourth straight start at the American Hockey League level, stopping 24 of 28 shots to improve to 7-4-3 for the Monsters. Marek Mazanec stopped 16 of 21 shots in the overtime loss for Milwaukee; he is 8-8-3.
The Monsters host Oklahoma City Friday at 7:30 p.m. The game can be heard live on ESPN 850 WKNR.
