Cleveland Monsters News Release
The Lake Erie Monsters (27-25-5-4) tied a franchise record with 49 shots on goal, but fell in a shootout by a 3-2 score to the Texas Stars (29-18-13-1) Tuesday night at Cedar Park Center in Cedar Park, Texas. Sam Henley and Stefan Elliott scored for the Monsters, who earn one point in the standings with the shootout loss. The Monsters finish their five-game road swing against the Toronto Marlies Friday at 7:00 p.m.
Texas took a 1-0 lead when Branden Troock finished off a two-on-none break at 6:51 of the first period, but the Monsters answered at 11:20 of the opening frame when Sam Henley redirected a Bruno Gervais point shot past Texas goalie Jussie Rynnas. The goal was the sixth of the season for Henley, and was also assisted by Tomas Vincour.
Former Monster Cameron Gaunce put the Stars on top 2-1 with a power play goal on a blast from the left point at 7:03 of the second period, and the Monsters countered with another power play goal. After the Monsters took possession with a tenacious forecheck along the end boards, Ben Street spotted Stefan Elliott open atop the right circle. Street connected on a pass with Elliott, and Elliott snapped a shot top-shelf to tie the game 2-2 with 1:03 left in the middle frame. Andrew Agozzino also assisted on the goal, which was Elliott's 14th of the season.
In a scoreless third period, Monsters goaltender Calvin Pickard and Texas goalie Jack Campbell, who relieved starter Jussi Rynnas with 2:01 left in the first period when Rynnas left the game due to injury, battled save-for-save. Pickard stopped 10 third period shots, while Campbell denied 15 Monsters shots. In overtime, each team mustered six shots on goal, and was unable to score.
In the shootout portion, Tomas Vincour scored for the Monsters and Brendan Ranford scored for Texas, forcing the shootout to extra frames. In the fourth round, reigning American Hockey League Most Valuable Player Travis Morin scored for Texas, while Mitchell Heard was stopped by Campbell, earning the shootout victory for the Stars.
Pickard stopped 26 of 28 shots for the Monsters; he is 16-13-6 on the season. Campbell was the winner in net for the Stars; he stopped 35 of 36 shots and improved to 5-11-5. Rynnas stopped 12 of 13 Monsters shots before leaving the game late in the first period.
The Monsters are back in action Friday at 7:00 p.m. Eastern for the final game of five straight on the road when they meet the Toronto Marlies. Friday's game airs live on AM 1420 'The Answer'.
