CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Monsters, proud American Hockey League affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, defeated the Milwaukee Admirals on Thursday at The Q by a final score of 5-3. With the win, Cleveland improved to 6-4-2-1 overall this season and with a .577 points percentage, currently sit alone in second place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
Milwaukee grabbed a 1-0 lead on Thursday when Bobby Butler potted an even-strength goal at 8:13 of the first period, but Cleveland's Calvin Thurkauf leveled the score at one with a five-on-five finish at 14:59, set up by Miles Koules' lone assist. The Monsters then took advantage of a late-frame five-on-three power-play to grab their first advantage of the contest at 18:50 of the first, courtesy of a Paul Bittner strike, made possible by a deft setup by Carter Camper and Dean Kukan.
After Milwaukee's Pontus Å berg tied the game at two with a power-play marker at 10:44 of the second, the Monsters' offense caught fire with three unanswered goals, from Camper on the power-play at 11:48, assisted by Sam Vigneault and Bittner, Hayden Hodgson at even-strength at 18:24, Hodgson's first professional goal, set up by Camper and John Ramage, and a five-on-five finish from Justin Scott at 18:53, courtesy of feeds from Brady Austin and Jordan Maletta.
In the final stanza, Tyler Moy netted an extra-man tally at 15:52 to draw Milwaukee within a pair at 5-3, but the Monsters found the finish line in a decisive home win. Cleveland's Matiss Kivlenieks improved to 2-3-1 in net this season by virtue of a 21-save performance, while Admirals backstop Juuse Saros fell to 0-1-0 between the pipes despite making 25 saves on Thursday.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Saturday rematch vs. the Admirals with full coverage, live from The Q, underway at 7:00 pm on 99X and the Monsters Hockey Network.
